You'll get the rest of askeladd back story later on. Since I'm really into history I immediately noticed askeladd body amor wasn't from the time period, it look more like Roman/Greek amor so I figured he stole it but when he fought Thors and mentioned his ancestor Artorius I realized he was a descendent of a Roman.

King Arthur served as a symbol of Welsh independence for a really long time. In fact the English actually faked finding Arthur's tomb at Glastonbury as a propaganda move against the Welsh. In an attempt to make them lose faith in the myth that Arthur would one day return. Turns out it took a little more than that to conquer Wales. This "discovery" happened in the 1190s and the Welsh weren't fully conquered until 1283, almost 100 years later.

Now that you know a little more about Askeladd's backstory, a few interesting notes. When swearing oaths, he'll sometimes swear on the Danish gods like Odin, and sometimes he'll swear on his ancestor Artorius. It seems to me that the second is for when he is serious. During the duel with Thors, he first swears to Odin. As far as he is concerned Thors is just like any other Dane. Then after the duel and seeing who Thors was as a person, when Thors is asking him to uphold the terms of their duel after being shot with the arrows, he then swears in the name of his ancestor Artorius. Just an interesting character detail. There are other instances of this throughout the season as well.
