Knives seems like quite the gentleman

Chrome

as you may have realized Vash and Knives aren't human, they're actually genetically engineered, that's why Steve was so afraid of them, I mean Vash has the ability to generate basically a nuke gun from his arm, there's actually a lot more info in the manga since there was a sequel series continuing the story after where the anime ends

Yeah everyone on this ship is pretty fucked up, but a space travel with only a few other persons would probably mess with your mind. I always feel bad for Knives, he was beat up and insulted constantly by Steve, taught by the captain that humans fucked their planet and then decided to leave to fuck other planets (probably leaving most other species to die), his brother started to have some kind of attachment to Rem and follow her views of not killing any living being even when it was totally irrational. He just hates humans for their destructive irrational nature.

If you look, knives was in direct contact with every person before they acted fucked up. While i cant actually remember what happened, it seems quite likely that knives was the reason that everything happened like it did. Though he probably did it because of his meeting with the drunk bastard and the information that humanity destroyed earth.

Not a western, but a SPACE western! I imagine all the strangely high tech things (like robots) scattered about the planet suddenly make a bit more sense. Knives is so magnanimous, kindly offering to let Rem live since Vash liked her so much. What a stand up dude.

And on today's episode of Scumbag Steve ruins Everything....

Vash looks great for someone over 100 years old! 😀

Knives is a fitting name for him, considering he “STABS” people in the back. 🔪 🔪 🔪

To expand on what Chrome said, Vash and Knives are _in some way_ related to the Plants (i.e. they were born from one), but no one knew that the Plants could do that, nor were they expecting them to. The scene they showed of the crew pointing guns at the newborns with Rem standing between them was showing the crew discovering them, freaking out and trying to kill them, and Rem stopping the crew (and presumably adopting the two). That's also how Vash was able to stop the Plant form melting down in episode 6—he was able to calm down the SOMETHING that resides in its core because he's related to it—and how he knew so much about the robots and how to shut them down in the episode where we met Wolfwood. There are a lot of subtle (and not-so-subtle) details like that to hint at his origins. One of the reasons I love this show so much! =D

I know the background music is really quite while your reacting, but I do believe that we've heard Rem's Song, Sound Life, in the background, multiple times in complete and incomplete forms. And at this point I don't believe it is a spoiler, because all the necessary information has been revealed, but its lyrics, at least in Japanese, are the history of this planet, the planet Gunsmoke.

Also, because Japan is cooler and seem to release their soundtracks for purchase, there is a soundtrack album for Trigun called Trigun: The First Donuts.

Fun fact: In the manga there was another person like Vash and Knives named Tessla. She was born before them, and the crew experimented and accidentally killed her before the twins were born. That's part of the reason Rem is so protective of the twins. Additionally Vash and Knives later find Tessla's remains kept in jars. It's what causes Knives to snap and view humans as monsters
