I design & build ships for a living and what he says about the keel is still accurate today. Though modern ships are encased by material, (steel, wood, etc.) the keel is still the vital core of the ship. If damaged even slightly the wear and tear of sea travel will make any scars on the keel expand extensively. Modernly we have ways to repair damaged keels, but it only works with steel vessels. The process of it is like brain surgery though, the ship needs to be brought to a well equipped shipyard and the section of the keel needs to be completely cut out. Once the damaged section of the keel is removed, they rebuild a new piece that fits exactly as the old one did. Then it's thoroughly welded in place. If anything is done improperly, the ship will likely buckle and break with a fresh sea trial.
