That flamboyant Joel kid that was standing in front of a store called "Shoemaker" was a jab at Joel Schumacher who had just recently directed Batman and Robin which is the The Room of comic book movies.

I think you'd like Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns (it has an older Batman beating up Superman), Miller's said his inspiration for having Bruce look chunkier like that was a Batman around his 60s would probably have the build of an old retired boxer, he's lost his reflexes, but not his strength, and he's still able to take a hell of a beating. They actually got Frank Miller's permission to do this homage as well, Bruce Timm's talked about how Frank loved it so much and asked him for a copy of the episode. Frank Miller's one of my favourite graphic novel artists by the way. His Batman comics are great, he basically redefined the character, but I think his Daredevil run is even better with some fantastic artwork.
