I think this is my second favourite 'last stand/sacrifice' in the series, though this one probably holds more emotional weight at this point. Also I love Erza coming in between them at the end there.

Mavis' plan probably would've worked, but it would've come at a life sacrifice too high for Makarov to pay. Remember how she also has the curse of contradiction like Zeref, but notice she isn't letting off any death blasts even though her real body is out now? "War dulls a persons sense of morality" like Zeref said once, her tactician side overwhelms her parental one, unlike Makarov whos all about his kids' safety. Regarding Natsu vs Gray, while their magic power level isn't on the same scale, END being way more powerful, magic isn't a straight exponential line. Just like Lucy was able to counter the A+ guy with her Celestial magic despite him being magnitudes more powerful than her, Gray is perfectly able to kill Natsu because of his Ice Devil Slayer magic. So yeah, they do stand on pretty equal ground all things considered. Naturally, their big sister has had quite enough of their bullshit
