Totally forgot about the OVA but will watch that too

Pulp

Steins Gate 0 next or new anime?

Anonymous

you could space it out, there was like 6 years before 0 came out.

Seth

I really think 0 is worth it. It’s definitely crazier and had me glued to the screen more

M2GZ

So I can finally comment this without worrying about spoilers but basically the premise for steins gate 0 is the story of the future okabe that showed up in okabes phone at the end of ep 23, the version of okabe that had to live with the idea that he ended up killing kirusu and thus worked to make the time machine for our “our okabe” to use in the finale. So this is the end of the story for what we could consider “our main Okabe” or rather the ova is. I liked a lot of the ideas in zero but IMO I think a lot of it fell flat in its execution and IMO felt fan servicy not saying it’s not worth a watch but I’d personally rather see other shows as reactions if I’m being complete honest. However if people really want to see it then so be. However for me the main steins gate story is forever peak anime.

Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense now. I should probably just put it to a vote 😂

M2GZ

That's most likely the safest option 😂😂

Awesome finale! Really hope you'll continue with Steins;Gate 0 from here. I think you'll really appreciate the changed tone and deeper exploration of some completely different themes in there. Plus it adds so much to this story!

Justice Hastings

After this series I recommend watching the OVA, then Steins;gate Dejavú, then finally Steins;gate Zero

Justice Hastings

Everyone seems to forget about the movie Steins;gate Dejavú. It’s a sequel to the original series

M2GZ

I've heard the movie isn't really canon, personally didn't really think it made much sense plot wise but it had some cute moments.

Sage

Here is my thoughts on Steins Gate zero. It's very self contained since you are basically watching a self contained timeline that is erased via the phone video message but it's worth it. In zero you get the see the characters pushed farther than in any point in this series. You also see the heart of Okabe more and I think it will answer your mad scientist question in ways you been thinking about. It's just really good characterization all around and even more complex moral dilemmas.

Vincent

Oh man, first rewatch in 8-ish years? Kind of a mixed bag for me. While it still has some incredible highs, it's a lot more juvenile than I remember with certain elements. You can definitely feel the plot crashing against its visual novel roots at parts, as we go down each of the cast members 'routes' in an episodic fashion. Despite the episodes dedicated to them, I also feel like a lot of the characters had untapped potential and could've been explored more. While your reactions helped immensely in having more appreciation for her character, Mayuri still feels somewhat sidelined by the plot, to the point where you have to intuit what her characterisation is beyond the surface level "Okarin! Tuturu~" . Similarly I also think Daru was somewhat one-note, despite being Okabe's closest male friend and the person who is moving the plot forward - he doesn't really have much going for him. Just writing this has kind of made me realize that Steins;Gate is actually very hands-off with character development. Like you said, Okabe and everyone else find themselves back at the place they started - with only Okabe really having enough memories to hold a new frame of reference but still very much himself. It's odd - not really sure how I feel about it. How much can we say that the characters were challenged and changed in Steins;Gate? I guess the time travel aspect hinders that part of the narrative, despite the residual memories. One thing that surprised me was the romance. It was so much more emotional than I remember. Despite me being less invested in the show than 8 years ago, I actually teared up when Okabe and Kurisu parted and when they reunite at the end here. I think because they really do need each other, romantically or not. They bring out the best in each other and having them constantly challenge each other might actually be where the core of the character development in the show is. Anyway, despite all of that, I enjoyed myself enough to keep going and I found myself looking forward to each new reaction drop. You helped me appreciate Mayurii more, and the show provided lots of avenues for you to discuss personal philosophies and anecdotes which kept me on-board. --- On the topic of Steins;Gate 0. You can consider it a continuation of the Steins;Gate world that introduces some new plot elements, an extended cast and continues its focus on Okabe's 'suffering arc'. It also features some material that is actually quite relevant to the current technological landscape of 2024 and beyond - so that may be an interesting topic that could work well with a reaction format. Ultimately I'm up for whatever you choose. Steins;Gate is pretty conclusive and I think that S;G 0 (from what I remember) doesn't introduce all that much thematically in the show that hasn't been explored in these reactions already.

definitely do the movie before zero, although if a new series were to pop up in between these that'd be fine

agoodwintv

That's a powerful pitch for Steins Gate 0 for me 😂 Thanks You make a very good point, it IS interesting that a lot of the cast end up not far off from where they started. I think the real heart for me was also Okabe and Christina. The rest of the cast I enjoyed as well but I think their development happens as a sort of perspective shift in Okabe and the viewer rather than in the characters themselves.

Vincent

Yeah, that's an interesting point actually! I have the perspective of a rewatch, so I already knew those characters and what problems they have. Whereas for a first-time viewer like yourself you're presented with quite archetypical mid-2000s anime characters, which are then subverted with interesting personal problems that become avenues to explore their vulnerabilities and strength of character as they ultimately give up what they cherish most for Mayurii's life.

Nioavellir

I've rewatched Steins;gate through reactors several times now, but only watched 0 once myself, I definitely think its a weaker series, the specific thing I remember is thinking the music is far worse placed. But ultimately it answers the most important question of all; Who was Darus wife?

Slim Cognito

Really glad to hear You'll watch 0 even if it doesn't end up on the channel. I think it has pretty obvious flaws and I think It's mostly the later stuff that's great but any more time with these characters is a win in my book.

Slim Cognito

I'm glad you've now watched my Top 3 anime. AOT, this and Violet. Can't wait to see what else comes next.

Spizami

I do hope you'll react to Steins;Gate 0. I actually like 0 more than I like the first series. I think it's well worth it. But the choice is yours in the end. :)

Arakis

The spin-offs and sequels are not necessary. The series is very much self-contained. Do whatever you feel like.

Seth

Is the OVA tonight at 9?

Steve.

I would actually recommend against watching the Deja Vu movie, it is non-canon and fundamentally breaks the established rules of the show’s time travel. It also retreads character arcs that should already be complete

Steve.

I do think 0 fleshes out the other characters more, if that’s something that was missing in the original

astroplace

hope we can get made in abyss or frieren for the next show!

M2GZ

To be honest I second this there were some cute moments but the plot I feel made actually no sense. I feel like a lot of spin-offs are more about wanted to give people more time with these characters instead of letting their arcs end where they should.
