My Hero got me straight up crying every damn episode this season. For some reason that Bakugo line at the end of this episode really hit me, the fact we have gone from episode 1 Bakugo “Kill yourself Deku” to this episode Bakugo “I will kill you if you die” hit me in the heart strings.

Matthew Richson

Man, this episode was such a step up from the manga version. The prison happened so fast whereas here it was more expanded, NTM the fantastic atmosphere. Also fun fact, the guy who was talking about how the prisoners aren’t human, apparently that’s the Meatball kid from Siketsu’s father.

Jake White

A. 100% agreed, I barely remembered anything from the prison break chapters tbh but this episode treated it a lot more seriously and weighty. B. Holy shit that fun fact makes so much damn sense now lmao and they look super similar too. Can’t believe I didn’t piece that together lol

Jake White

Also just a reminder, Overhaul is basically a quirkless normal person now since his power required him to touch things for it to activate and both of his arms were removed

Matthew Richson

Actually the prison break was only a single chapter… And while it hasn’t been confirmed, the appearance and personality were too similar for it to not be the case.

I like how AFO is kinda a weeb, like he was inspired to be a villian by a comic book as a kid. And the man constantly calls himself the “demon lord” which is kinda funny cuz it sounds almost childish

Jake White

And Bakugo most 100% absolutely does not truly hate Deku lmao. Anyone who was trying to debate that is goofy lol

God this show is so good. I've been loving these story episodes. I'm a simple man so I love the action in My Hero the best but all of these backstory and setup/resolution episodes have been so killer.

I kind of feel bad for Spinner because he is in a really awkward situation here. He holds no loyalty to AFO, only Shigaraki, and I think on some level, Spinner intuitively knows the AFO does NOT have Shigaraki's best interests in mind and is only using him to gain more power for himself. But at the same time, in order for him to help Shigaraki, all he can currently do is follow AFO and allow Shigaraki to heal. There is nothing else he can do. Also I don't understand how people could think that Bakugo genuinely hates Deku. Maybe in the earlier seasons (though their first mock battle in season 1 had me thinking otherwise) you could think that hatred was genuine. But just a few episodes ago Bakugo himself explained his own complicated emotions towards both himself and Deku. He didn't hate Deku, if anything he feared him. And that fear made him lash out. And he absolutely regrets those actions and cares for Deku so much. He's just not the best at showing it.

Yeah it's almost laughable. And the fact that he says it out loud at least twice... embarassing

Yea I think it very dumb for people to say Bakugo hates deku?? Horikoshi has shown time and time again that Bakugo does care about him and hes grown so much. But I think what puts people off is his personality, because no matter how much he grows as a person and develops overall, hes still hot tempered and foul mouthed. Which I would think people would be smart enough to realize that Bakugo isnt just gonna suddenly start being super formal and polite? Like we've seen his mom, they have explosive personalities and they say whats on their mind. Thats who they are. Its also the only way he knows how to express himself overall.

I'm going to post this soon to YouTube and there's a high chance this comes up in comments again. As for Spinner... honestly I'm impressed he even voiced his concerns. I'd just be waiting and watching to try and figure out what to do

agoodwintv

This is just a guess but I think at least for some people, they might identify more with Bakugou (and even dislike Deku). Having connected with Bakugou's character early, they may be attached to an earlier version of what they saw and liked in him.

bit of info the anime left out. If the government consider you or your quirk a big enough danger you can be locked in Tartarus without ever officially being convicted of a crime

The white hair reveal is simply because it shows that it was Toya all along. Dabi had dyed his hair black to conceal his identity, and then wanted a dramatic way to reveal that he is in fact the same son of Endeavor that had white hair. (Although, I suppose on a deeper level, you could say that it means he has some level of affinity or relation to his mother's ice abilities, as well) I haven't yet seen most of Goodwin's MHA reactions, so I don't want to say things that he's actually addressed. (I've only seen a few that come on YouTube autoplay when I'm making dinner. It's quite ... cheerful(?) to see Season 1 and what both MHA and Goodwin were like at the start of this journey, or the Invisible Girl Roast, which is amazing, and made me feel guilty for calling your aesthetic "modern gulag," sorry.) Anyway, though.... One thing I will say is that Horikoshi (the author) seems not just critical of the media, but like Goodwin was saying this episode, the public at large consistently has the worst possible takes on basically every important event. They consistently pounce on fragments of data and blow up minor issues out of proportion, neglecting the good that people do, and actively exacerbating an already bad situation by making it hard for the people who are trying to help to succeed in doing so. In other words, they're pretty realistic? I'm not normally that cynical, and overall I'd say I'm hopeful for humanity, but sometimes, both mass media and the people who consume it are pretty close to how they're portrayed here, focusing on Endeavor's domestic abuse instead of considering their own role in creating or their own responsibility in facing a nationwide crisis on a level not seen in a generation.

I connect a lot more with Bakugo's character than Deku's and to me it seems like if you continue to follow Bakugo like that throughout the seasons you'll also gain a further respect and appreciation for Deku just like Bakugo does gradually as the show goes on. Very odd when I see people out there unironically calling Todoroki or Bakugo the "Real protag of the series" when within the show itself those two guys are constantly talking about how much they look up to Deku.

agoodwintv

It's quite an unfavorable depiction. But I do think it's realistic and not cynical to say that it at least captures SOMETHING that is easily / frequently observable in life. There's some truth in there. I guess the only question is to what degree that represents all of society in the MHA universe and our own.

Unsure if you caught it but All for One continues his trend of stealing hero lines with "this is the story of how i became the greatest demon lord"

kingafreund

Omg, that episode summary! Where's the lie though. Here I was, expecting a prison break ever since he got thrown in, and somehow, everything about this still completely blindsided me. This was so much worse than everything I could have imagined. Yet at the same time, it also feels like the only way things were ever going to happen, that's some pretty incredible writing. I wonder about the LoV's loyalties as well. Spinner and Toga have a real connection with Shigaraki, so they can't like this, but what could they even do at this point? I guess Dabi couldn't care less as long as he gets to do his thing, like he's been doing this whole time. In a sense, it feels like the LoV lost too. Half of them dead or captured, and overtaken by AfO, left to do his bidding or die, most likely. I guess that's the mark of a good villain, like you said, he's nothing if not patient, has tons of backup plans and eventually, things will go his way and it's terrifying. How did he end up as the only winner in all of this? I feel bad for everyone right now, wild!

Chris Sharpe

I love how AFO just owns the villain title. A theme in MHA is how society brands a lot of regular people and criminals as nefarious “villains”, yet AFO leans into that title, hence why they decided to lean into the name “League of Villains”.

im so excited for this half of the season to get animated
