the last part is kinda easy to miss but basically the reason we as a viewer never got to see shimada's face properly until the end was that he wasn't actually looking at this game, but was in his mind too pre-occuppied with getting to gotou. Hence the "you're finally looking this way" when he starts struggling and notices shimada's strength.

To answer your question about shogi and the writer, i believe she actually had no real experience with shogi at all before writing sangatsu. After her first manga, it seemed like she wanted to go out of her comfort zone and write something widely about professionalism, but for a game she doesn't know a huge amount about. Essentially, she has a vision for how she wants each game to go, and then has a shogi master give the individual moves and meaning behind them all to put it into the context of the game. Anyway, I really can't stress enough how much I appreciate the direction of the second half of this episode. The narrative is so focused on Gotou that neither Rei nor the viewer has even considered Shimada to be a threat - the fact that he has this very average design and no distinct features only adds to that - everything about him screams "background character". that we literally don't see Shimada's face once until the very end when Rei realises he's actually losing is such an awesome way to show how Rei and the viewer are just considering him to be an obstacle, despite him being allegedly a great player. i think rei's greatest weakness as a player and a person is his tendency to get tunnel visioned and ignore important things in his focus on something else, and that's probably exactly what Nikaidou wanted Shimada to 'split open'. Sorry about the full on essay, Shimada is actually my favourite character in the show and I love this introduction to him.

That's also basically where most of Rei's problems stem from currently, at least partially. He got so focused on how his presence was hurting Kyoko and Ayumu that he completely neglected his own mental health and he focused so much on shogi that he kinda lost the opportunity to grieve the loss of his family. And previously, he was so wrapped up in his own negative feelings that he lost sight of the fact that he's surrounded by people who love and care for him.
