Makes you wonder if Nintendo devs had these ideas building up for years, but couldn't touch them because *some*one more senior decreed they were locked to the "New" era.

honestly, to me it really feels like those fangames and romhacks you see, it really makes me wonder if there is some sonic mania element of getting modders on board. At the very least it's pretty clear they drew inspiration from some of the crazier mario maker stuff. Very glad they did too, it's such a wonderfully creative, bizarre game.
