I'm gonna be real, I'm surprised in that I didn't think they'd go so full hog as to how they have. Then again I guess if you don't face any real repercussions you have zero reason to stop.

Even if people insist gatcha mechanics aren’t gambling, they still be design prevent you from just purchasing an item. Even if you’re okay with micro transactions, gatcha actively tells the customer “No, you don’t get a choice.” And before people bring up booster packs for trading cards, there is one specific difference: I can trade those cards, I can’t trade a green level helmet in a game because the developers didn’t think to allow players to trade crap.

Also, random distribution serves a mechanical purpose in physical products, so that they all get sold or handed out. Digital unwanted stuff just gets ignored.
