Are we too nice to indie games? It's a question I've thought about for years since I first saw it posed.

Seriously... I've had this topic saved up for three years when I first wrote about it.

The game industry stopped being super bullshit juuuust long enough for me to finally squeak it in.

People really care that much about the intro? o.O

I intentionally avoid indie games (and non-indie games, like Dark Souls), honestly, at least until the hype dies down. I'd been hearing about Minecraft for years before I looked into it, and the same is true of Super Meat Boy and at least a half-dozen others. The insufferable ways people trot out their indie darlings like they're the second coming of fucking christ make me think, "No, I don't want to be a part of that. I'll wait until that goes away, and then I'll check out the game." Then I can say that Braid sucks without being burned at the stake for heresy.

I think that's a good attitude. Indie games have a smaller budget so they can't really compete with AAA games. They as developers and we as consumers, need to adjust our expectations and set a realistic criteria for what we expect a "good" game to be.
