With his weirdly mysterious PlayStation exclusives, Gilson B. Pontes is a legend among aficionados of terrible videogames. Sadly, it turns out he's just another bad dev with no tolerance for criticism.

After publishing a video on Gilson's latest mess, I received a copyright takedown strike. And another. And another. It soon became clear that Gilson, in retaliation for me saying his awful games are awful, was trying to kill my channel.

Obviously, he failed, but he came close. YouTube, for its part, tried to play no part. Not until the lawyers were threatened. It's only thanks to my platform and resources that this channel is still here. So let's talk about this whole sorry display.

Also, Gilson is a fraud.

Oddly fitting that this notification pops up on my phone while Embers Rise by Miracle of Sound plays on my Spotify 😁🤔 Don't let those wannabe devs get to you, Stephanie!

Finding out that Gilson is a plagarist just adds a level of "not enough popcorn on Earth" to the whole situation that makes the whole video that much more...jucier for a casual observer. I guessed that Gilson had some form of dirt over the Sony execs but now I really want to know what it is. Did one of them "David Cameron" their way into games media?

Anonymous

Legally pressured YouTube, the big corporation, into reinstating your videos, NOW THAT'S PUNK! Also you're looking good Steph inspite of the stress, you look like you've lost weight too? You go trash girl!

Iochannon

I wonder if "Gilson" is the kid of a Sony executive? The once per first quarter timing sounds like something legal/financial... checking a box to satisfy some kind of requirement.

I once asked a question on Asking Sterling about this exact situation. Specifically, why Digital Homicide never tried it. It seemed like the obvious play for a spiteful hack developer, and the Romaine brothers certainly proved themselves to be that. I guess they just had barely enough sense to know that it would have incurred too much risk and negative publicity. In other words, even Digital Homicide had more sense than Gilson B Pontes.

Definitely agree that this is the best ending GBP could have gotten. Hopefully he recognizes that. Probably not, but maybe the knowledge that you’re prepared to take YouTube to court is intimidating enough for him to back way the hell off. Thank god for you, and thanks for making my mondays a little more bearable! You do good work!

Wow, he has a IMDB page https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10414921/

Thanks for this! All GBP managed to achieve was pushing me to actually subscribe to your Patreon. Hopefully more to come!

I'm glad you won. And you're right: YouTube needs to punish those who make fraudulent claims. Content creators bare all the risk and gain nothing but keeping what they already have when someone copyright strikes their channel. And you'd think that YouTube, who is nothing without the content creators, would perhaps be a bit more invested in keeping content creators happy. But why should they? They've been fine with this exploitative system. It's working for them because content creators keep posting their content here because YouTube is essentially a monopoly. It's such a broken system and I appreciate you continuing to fight it James Stephanie. Thank God for you. 🙂

It would be awesome to figure out how to bring YouTube down a peg but honestly, I doubt this is the suit to do it. The thing that will do it is Sony, Microsoft, GM, Hitachi, or Disney. It is going to take a mega corporation having their site taken down via a DMCA and Google getting sued for billions of dollars. It will be billionares suing trillionares. I personally am about to stop watching YouTube they changed their ads and it has become intolerable and they can do it because no one else has the scope and resources. I am so happy that this worked out for you. I would seriously look into building your own website with your own video browser and posting 10 second videos on YouTube saying that there is a new video available. I don't know how feasible this is or if it is even possible.

The irony you were just starting to draw amusement from his "work". Hopefully, GBP steps back and doesn't poke the bear any more. Youtube doesn't want the precedent of what will come from defending their horribly shit copyright claim system. Sony doesn't want to have to reveal their connection that repeatedly gives a known plagiarist a platform. AND GBP clearly doesn't want who they are revealed to the world.

This was a deeply satisfying video to watch, and I bet it was even more satisfying to make, though I am sorry it had to be made at all. Thanks for being a fabulously stubborn and cranky old fuck; I find it very inspiring.

Don't go after him. Not because he doesn't deserve it, but because he's just the one dude, and there are too many of these asshats who do this stuff and it might not be worth the time and effort for the one dude. But it might be ideal to get coalition of creators going - a whole bunch of small creators like yourself. If the coalition was interested in creating a union like structure where all of you have the power to say, "fuck off" to Youtube - because ultimately, it's Youtube who is the problem here - you'd have the power to stop shit like this from happening, or at the very least, diminish some of the personal stress you get when it does. The coalition could pool their resources and be a real threat to Youtube if something like this happens again. Good luck in whatever you end up doing. :)

Okay, when I learned about how he sent Laura a "review code", I laughed harder and longer than I may have ever laughed in my entire life. Jesus fucking christ.

He's not worth the stress to go after him more. If he were to try it again, bring down the hammer then.

I had wondered if pontes was like Daniel Johnston but without the talent. I gave this person too much credit. Pontes is another example why I give James Stephanie Fucking Sterling Son my monies.

This is why I give you money on Patreon. I'm sorry you had to share the strawberry licorice with the lawyer, but sharing is good, right?

There's a legal term that refers to a legal question that re-occurs. And this is actually a demonstration that the legal question has in fact repeated, and nothing has happened to law to make it not happen again. That would be the grounds upon taking this up with YouTube, that their process doesn't, in fact, prevent abuse, but encourages it, and hence, they're costing you legal fees - and every other creator - because they refuse to deal with it.

“Yes, this is a simulation”. Happy now?

I've been researching Gilson and his "company" and I found some interesting bits about him on forums and an "accolade trailer" he deleted from his Youtube channel (that included footage of you out of context) just the day before he tried to take your channel down. Let me know if you ever want me to share my findings, though I have to say that the stuff I found on forums like NeoGaf aren't verifiable, but certainly do foreshadow his current behavior if the first-hand encounters people had with him and accounts of his behavior are accurate...

Man, I fucking love strawberry liquorice. Hey, how does anyone exist without criticism? How do you even improve if you're not interested in hearing any kind of criticism about what you're doing, no matter if it's delivered constructively or not? Not that there's any point in deconstructing anything that Gilson does because 1) it'd take, like, for fucking ever, and 2) he would probably also see that as an attack so you may as well rip into him. He's not a 12 year old trying hard. I don't think. And I say this as an artist AND a programmer, who's not only done 5 years of postgrad work, but who regularly has all his work taken apart with gusto by colleagues and also just random bastards. It's literally good for you and what you do to be criticised, even savagely, because most people aren't psychopaths and while some people just offer criticism for the sake of it, a lot of it has legitimate value. Peer review, and then actual review, is how you improve. I don't just ask my partner for opinions on my work: I go out of my way to get input on it, firstly because she wouldn't understand the programming part but also because she definitely thinks I'm awesome and has an inherent bias. But then again. Gilson's horrible portfolio is the same thing all over again? So basically he's not able to reflect on anything and doesn't think he has to change because he's never accepted criticism and never seen any reason to improve. Thanks Jim! It's all weirdly calming for me.

I will always hate YouTube for how pivot they were in my middle school years. meaning they were the place that I dreamed of, and even want to put my first animation online to show my talent. ironically in 2012, but back down, because the early signs of YouTube's eventual downfall were starting to show. That original animation was lost my first flash drive, & all other backups where lost on my first laptop, aka my family laptop that I was really overly attached to.
