Patenting game mechanics is bad. It's bad. It's simply bad. So is Google Stadia, and we're going to talk about both Google's failings and Warner Bros. Interactive's patent hoarding.

Google ceases Stadia game development, Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis System becomes WB's sole dominion, AND we get to take a look at what I've been doing in Monster Hunter lately. It's what you all tuned in for.

Love you.

So gloriously odd! Informative and entertaining.

Also, I would've mentioned the patent on smoothly transitioning from first person to third person in racing/driving games... Literally an elusive right on how to move a god damned camera!

Benedict Holland

How restrictive is the patent? From experience, design patents are so broad as to be functionally useless or so specific that no one can implement them anyway. For example, if they patented this about orca for a 5 year old game, I doubt it will have an impact. Remember. Apple tried to patent a rectangle with round corners. I don't want this out of context. Any design patent is basically a bad idea. Pantone colors are a basic exception because of branding and color representation. But like, if their patent was so specific as to be functionally useless, they wasted millions of dollars. If it is broad, someone will sue them, probably another AAA studio, and will win. Either way, billionaires sue billionaires.

Well, that was...surprisingly depressing. Also I would I would be completely fine with (and would even encourage) a weekly Monster Hunter update.

Can't wait to see the video, but I gotta start by saying I knew Jim would look glorious in a purple lipstick. I fucking love it. <3 <3 <3

The second game, Shadow of War is superior to the first in every way now

In the meantime billionaires also sue indie companies and drive down competition

But now I have nioh 2, 13 sentinels, cloudpunk, and more. I will probably never play it and I never picked it up because of the micro transactions. So for me, it is a dead game, like battlefield 2. Will some pick it up? Maybe. But I also have elite dangerous and MHW. Why would I go back to a game, good as it is, years later when better have come out?

Harry Moore

I dunno, for me new games existing don't make an old game that's good not worth checking out. Some shit is timeless.

Benedict Holland

Shadow 2 is timeless? Damn. The only game for me like that is baulders gate 2 and probably dark souls 1. I love that game. If it is that good, I might pick it up if it goes on sale.

And just to add fuel to the Stadia dumpster fire, the developer behind Terraria declared the Stadia port cancelled because Google are an awful company to deal with, and he declared outright that “doing business with you is a liability”, a sentiment we have absolutely heard before here.

The most helpful response I've found to be for people that are confused about the singular use of "they" is reminding them that "you" is plural as well as singular without the term changing form in any way. It doesn't always work, but it's what has yielded the highest success rate when trying to explain it to people.

That’s a good way of explaining it. I’ve found success in explaining it as “‘they’ is a good option when you aren’t sure”
