Content

The ancient debate over content creation and copyright has flared up again, this time with a wannabe Stadia director claiming Twitch streamers should pay a fee to broadcast gameplay.

It was part of a larger claim that recent DMCA takedowns of Twitch videos are deserved, because apparently it's good when record labels have content scrubbed from the Internet over alleged music rights violations that nobody's been informed about.

Should be fun to tear into that ridiculous assertion, so let's do that. Happy Halloween, etcetera!

I really thought I had traveled back in time when that tweet started going around

Serving up some harsh browns for walking sims as a genre, but it’s true. I honestly expected Jim to bring up “That Dragon Cancer” especially because the devs claimed quite publicly their game lost sales because of letsplays. I personally agree with the simple fact that if your game can be replaced by a video of a play through, perhaps it is not that compelling as a game in the first place. The medium is the message.

Pete Spicer

The saddest takeaway for me is Jim’s noting that his audience is declining. I genuinely don’t know how I feel about that part, because I know he’s described his channel as “go-nowhere” but honestly I couldn’t thank God enough for Jim... more and more journalists are ignoring the big issues.

That argument of "streaming is ok, as long as the game pubs say its ok" is something I hadn't considered before now - thanks for raising it. Also, what were all those really bizarre old films you edited in? Was one of them just a man oiling himself in front of a mirror?

So you buy the system, which is tricked out to allow for super easy posting and recording of play footage. And you buy the game, which is an overpriced and unfinished mess you'll be equivalent to re-buying about twice over with passes and DLC and junk. So.... where exactly have you NOT paid for all this? You pretty well hit it on the head Jim. People like this are the same people that want you to buy advertisement costumes as DLC, but with less viability and sense. After all, people might like the design of an ad or be happy to plaster their favorite things all over themselves (the friggin' addicts). People don't like the idea of being told 'no, you can't share the thing you bought already, you don't own that'. You know what happens when I don't own the thing I buy that isn't essential to my life? I don't buy it.

Good arguments Jim - to the extent that there even is an argument to be had about this. Obviously the argument is over, as you said in the video. I wonder what you think about the idea of Twitch paying royalties to publishers in a similar model to how Youtube interacts with music royalty companies? Twitch policing some set of rules rather than individual streamers paying for licenses (as was so laughably suggested in that tweet). This would result in be corporations arguing over bullshit and probably some games being 'banned' from Twitch and it would be terrible for everyone involved apart from the few at the top... which is why I think it could still happen. Or do you think the argument is over at this level of the industry too?

IP laws are messed up and YouTube assuming any copyright claim is legit until proven otherwise is being abused as all get out by the big companies with the pull. The only thing in the streamer's favor is that as I understand it the law requires an IP holder to be consistent. They can't suddenly decide streaming is bad and ban everyone from doing it after encouraging it for years.

To me, this is like a bread distributor (not producer) walking into a sandwich shop they distribute bread to and saying they want a percentage of the sales of the sandwiches.

Good video, though I have to disagree with you on Nostalgia Critic, not ALL of his reviews are negative(in fact like you people have a habit of claiming he only ever does negative videos when in reality he's done plenty of positive ones as well) so I'd argue they are free advertising for films(i'll bet you most people had long forgotten about the movie "The Pest" before NC did a video on it) and honestly his videos never turned me off from seeing a film(though there were plenty of terrible films he's reviewed that I had zero intention of watching long before he reviewed them) and I doubt they did for many others as well. Adrian has always been a dumbass, I saw one of his blog posts years ago whining about Jade in Dying Light and he also said some very dumb shit about Anita, he comes off as one of those closeted bigots and it wouldn't shock me if he's alt-right.

RedBedroomRecords

Also as TotalBiscuit pointed out way back when, most people aren't going to want to play a game that ultra-depressing anyways.

RedBedroomRecords

yes that's what idiots like Adrian conveniently forget to mention, there's already a cost in paying for the game to start with, why should the publishers get MORE money on top of that.

Twit In A Hat

For once, I don't blame YouTube for that; I blame the DMCA (and equivalent laws in other jurisdictions).

Twit In A Hat

"I saw one of his blog posts years ago whining about Jade in Dying Light". D... dare I ask? Was it just general insecure male gamer whining about women in games?

RedBedroomRecords

No just complaining about that character in particular, I have a feeling it was largely jealously in regards to Dying Light selling better then his game Bulletstorm(and him feeling that Trishka in that game was a better character then Jade)since both games were made by Polish development studios: http://www.theastronauts.com/2015/02/dying-light-damsels-distress/

Totally unrelated to the subject, but I am really curious. Does anyone knows what is the background music at 18:10? I assume it is from Carl Catron but I'm unable to find it.
