We've heard of bullshots, we've heard of "downgrade" controversies. A relatively new form of misleading hype is something I've dubbed "The Mic Trick."

Ubisoft has been slyly performing the trick for the past two E3s, and it's time we talked about it, because I've got this weird feeling that Europe's EA doesn't quite realize we've cottoned onto it yet.

The purple donger makes another appearance.

With all respect to mr. Sterlingson I thought that the mic trick is a cool thing. It didn't make me interested in The division at all. I think it'll be just another looter shooter like destiny or whatever but the mic trick made the trailer really enjoyable.

Maybe it's my cynicism talking (I am a Jimquisition listener, after all) but none of the audio files in this video sounded even remotely like in-game dialogue. They sounded like dudes talking into a mic. It's true that they paint a picture of an online experience that is unlikely at best, but unlike graphical downgrades cut features, they still showcase a game experience that you can theoretically have, provided you find the right playgroup.

Your gamer "conversations" were the best because let's be honest... That's basically what it comes down to. Idiots

Keep up the great work man. That video reminded me I had a "DUTY!" NAY! THE HONOR! To support you!

prerecorded in game chatter is really odd because it's often so humorless. most of what I ever hear are people being silly and then laughing occasionally at a joke or just commenting on something they saw in the game world that was odd. even if they did that a little it would feel less like an audio uncanny valley than it does.

This is probably the first time I don't (completely) agree with you Jim Son (I made it sound Korean). Or I at least fail to see the problem completely, I consider it advertising, which is fake almost by definition. But maybe I am in error. It sounded 100% scripted and fake, and made to sound what it would sound (but never does), when you and your dude-bros play the game online. I also find graphical downgrades to be far, far more deceptive and bordering on violating consumer rights. I watched the live event, it was entertaining. Also watched a bit of live NASA footage.
