Red Dead Redemption 2 has launched the beta for its online mode and Red Dead Online is... fun? It's quite a lot of fun actually, but it's let down by stingy payouts and the shadow of microtransactions.

Gold bars are a grind and cash comes at a pittance. The core of the game's a laugh but it's so discouraging without premium pricing that I don't know how much time I want to spend in it.

When the core gameplay loop insidiously make you feel like somebody wants to sell you something after you already payed them, I'm put off. GTA Online and Red Dead Online on paper would be something I would absolutely love to play but with the gameplay loop designed around the microtransactions, it would be a void of fun. Even grindy RPGs typically give the player feedback that they are getting closer to a goal. This is just "the only way to get this without being bored for a long time is to cough up the wallet".
