This week's episode examines the industry's obsession with "making it cinematic" and how, despite that obsession, videogames still don't even understand what makes films work. Let's stop using meaningless terms to justify garbage decisions.

Cinematic (The Jimquisition)

http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition http://www.thejimquisition.com It is high time we stopped using the word "cinematic" as a catch-all excuse for rubbish, and stopped letting PR mouthpieces spout it unchallenged. The "AAA" game industry's filmic parroting is not only misguided, it's misunderstood by the parrots themselves.

Oftentimes the use of cinematic seems to relate less to the developers wanting their games to be like movies, and appears to be used more to make excuses for shortcomings of the title. "We wanted it to be cinematic" sounds better than admitting 60fps was beyond the capability of the developer, especially if that shortcoming is due to the hardware of the company bankrolling the development (I'm looking at you The Order 1886). A big publisher would probably spout any meaningless garbage if the alternative was "This was the best we could do."

I never understood that Cinematic talk, but to be fair Willem Dafoes Face did make Beyond better. It is shite, but it would be worse without him.

I didn't really use to have a BIG problem with the usage of the word "cinematic" by game developers as long as they referred to a specific aesthetic used to enhance the game's look or referring to games that follow a very involving story that sucks you in. Issue is that applied when a) videogame technology was a little bit under what it is right now, so "feeling like a movie" was a step up, and b) not all videogames had much of a story to begin with. Now, both of those statements don't apply anymore, so it makes no sense to continue using the term "cinematic" to describe a game.

I've been watching the Jimquisition for years and years now, and what jim has talked about in this video is total bullshit, Clearly as we can see Jim's cinematic Chin fold(s) looking 300.5% more beautiful with the borders to focus on it and the grain to slow it down for us, Clearly we just need games to copy this. We need a Jim sterling in every game thats cinematic or its just not Cinema. So not less cinema, More Jim Sterling.

Chris Dias

Have these designers look up Douglas Trumbull, and then they can shut up.

You were "shouted down en masse" for your earlier piece about treating games like film? Are you just ignoring all the positive comments you received back then? And "shouted down" implies that you had to go into hiding or something, because of the mob forming against you. That's not how I remember it happening. Maybe you're exaggerating somewhat?

Jason Youngberg

Yep, you called it. But don't worry, the term "cinematic" will go away as soon as AAA companies find another BS term to use like "experience" or "individuality".

Strangely relieved by the return of the Iconic Red Tie. (And thank you for replying to me last week.) But I have to admit I spent a bunch of this episode going "Don't tease me with old footage of your Fahrenheit playthrough! Give me the new stuff! Solve the stupid obnoxious book puzzle! You haven't even gotten to the terrible psychic!" (I did a household playthrough of that game like six years ago, utterly unspoiled, and when we got to the end there was this momentary pause and, "It's like playing a Heinlein novel. Post-braineaters." Your playthrough has been very cathartic.)

I highly recommend you read that thread over. Yes, there are some positives there, but the hatred my show received when it debuted on The Escapist is pretty legendary. I've admitted fully before that early episodes were shit, too. Anybody with experience following my work ought to know I was being somewhat over-the-top with my smugness at the end there.

More of Quantic's masterpiece will be coming. I probably can't get away with not putting one out this week. :-)

"Cinematic. Cinematic. Cinematic." If you say it enough times, it loses all meaning. "Tartlet."
