These pieces are linked and equally well documented so I'm grouping it into one post. Timelapses will be uploaded separately.

About the process:

  • Client wanted a new icon, I've done an icon for him before that he really liked so I kept that in mind while thumbnailing. Made sure to have the face plate/helmet be the focus.
  • When I thumbnail I tend to start with the most "safe" composition and end with the most "risky" comp. In this case I started with something similar to that original icon and ended with something more dynamic with lots of movement.
  • Client liked the energy of the last one. Once it was finished he wanted to see a full version of it (I suspect because of the strong directional energy imbued in the icon, a full scene is heavily implied)
  • Again for the thumbnails I made them on a scale of "safe" to "dynamic." In this case the safe one was chosen, as it was a "direct translation" of what I was imagining beyond the borders of the icon originally.
  • The main challenge between these two pieces was the translation from icon to full body. I changed the lighting a lot, and the pose had to be adjusted a bit. I was tempted to recycle more information from the icon than I actually did, but what works for a portrait doesn't necessarily work for a full body illustration!
