He breaks the 4th wall the same way Ferris Beuller does, and from the killer's perspective, its for the same reason. He's having fun and the 4th wall breaks are comedic moments for him, but for us the audience its a way for us to see how sick he is. They don't just want to kill people, they want to have "fun" doing it. The director is doing the same thing. He gives us a hint of a happy ending when the wife finally kills one of them, then yanks it away from us, saying, yeah I could give you a happy ending if I wanted to, I"ll give you some hope, then yank it away. The director is doing to us what the killers did to the couple.
