I'm just pressing play now so I'm not sure if you've looked anything up, but you should look a bit into the life of Hunter S. Thompson he's a pretty interesting guy. This story spawned from him being hired to write some articles for Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated. And he went on the most insane of drug binges and turned in this story.

Also I don't think I'm the first to mention that some of these scenes, especially checking into the hotel like the floor patterns and people's faces distorting, is one of the most accurate portrayals of an acid trip you'll see on film.

The quest he is on, is all about finding the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of Hunter S Thompson of course (The movie is great visually, but the novel it is based on explain it alot more). This movie is actually some sort of true story, and Depp mentioned that pretty much everything in the movie was scripted. One of the classic line in the movie was actually improv by Gary Busey, he is the sheriff who stop him in the desert, the final part where he ask him for a kiss was not scripted! Oh and also that part where he has a flashback of the 60' and he says: "oh and there i am" and you see this old dude sitting at a desk...well that was the real author Thomson. :)

The first time I watched this, I was with a couple of friends and we were all high out of our minds. That's about all of the memory I haven't blacked out, except that 20 years later, I still remember that carpet warping scene really freaking us out. Whatever we were on made that particular visual toooo much.

One of my all time favorites, though one i totally understand if others don't like. As i think others pointed out this is based on the book by Hunter Thompson. which itself is partly autobiographical, partly allegorical, partly pure acid trip. Thompson is widely renowned as one of the great american writers, utilizing a method he called "gonzo journalism" in which, rather that writing objectively he inserted himself headfirst into the narrative. He got famous for writing the book Hells Angels after spending a good amount of time running with one of the chapters of the gang. Heck he's pretty much the reason the Hells Angels have the reputation they do, rather than just being another street gang. I'm prattling on but this movie, and Thompson, is just so near and dear to my heart.

Were you high on psychs though? Took me ten years to really appreciate the mindset going into this bonkers movie because I just had no frame of reference, like, at all. Completely shifted my perspective, appreciating this insanity for what it is.

Ohh! You actually already did F&L! Awesome! And you actually got it! I've watched this film on every major substance portrayed in it - with the exception of adrenochrome, of course... :) Fun thing to do 😶
