I knew in my heart that we were going to go here and do stuff like this, and that it was going to be shocking and horrendous, and maybe it was just my time away from this anime, but I was captivated and terrified by the carnage presented. MAPPA did a great season premiere and let me take a collective sigh of relief for all the fan base. It’s obvi different, and I may personally miss my thicc black outlines, but no denying this lived up to my expectations and the quality needed to carry on such an amazing story. The change in style lends itself well to the timeskip, things looking different makes me feel like time moved forward by a lot. The shot with our new Jaw Titan (making her series debut?!) blocking the bullets that would have hit Gabi and Falco, and the scene where Reiner took the hit for Zeke, together made the episode incredible for me. Also, the scene with the Eldian bodies in two lines, dragging against the floor all tied up in those straight jackets with their fucked up faces, before they were dropped out the back hatch of that trooper plane deployed on top of the enemy as they ran for their lives and tried not to get eaten... It was freaky and weird and terrifying and amazing and exactly what AoT is and should be. Mad props to MAPPA. They got it right. I think some of the titans were weirdly stiff, but only for shots about a second long. And I was a little knocked out of the immersion the first time seeing the Armored Titan in 3D; I dont think it was worse than GCI Colossal Titan in S3P2 tho. More fluid, but kind of like in a video game cinematic. Not bad, just unexpected. I felt the same way the first time Zeke transformed for a moment, but thats all super pedantic and just my first take on night one. I really enjoyed the 3D stuff with all the artillery and the tank trains, and with the landscapes shots with that bird. The vibe I got from the OP was like…chilling? Certain explosions seemed to repeat themselves in the intro over and over, like four or five times. Maybe thematically tying together history repeating itself, or the horrors of war repeating themselves no matter the generation or technology, or our new cast of young soldiers repeating a similarly gruesome history as our old cast. Like Ashe said with “the enemy is the inner me,” AoT has a running theme of there always being a seeming enemy of operation in our characters lives, but even when defeated, victory isn’t what it looked like before hindsight gained and there is always a new enemy waiting at the next level, and the repeating visuals in the OP made me think of this again. I felt like the message was, war (and conflict in general) never really ends, as I was watching it. And there are these overlapping and smashcutting of rainbow colored clouds that are then reshown as smoke and other times flames and then explosions and bombs (and maybe even like gas weapons or flamethrowers?) and in my mind this blended together an idea about how terrible yet how similar all those ways of murdering really are. It all looks the same bc it all is the same. Like they are indistinguishable from one another in the art because they are indistinguishable from one another when the conclusion of death is the same for all methods, no matter what you decipher the form of death looks in the moment. I didnt even notice it was all black and white except for the clouds until Ashe pointed that out, damn good eye friend! And fam the marching soldiers in a line like some fascist authoritarian movie or poster from the ‘30s freaked me out and def made me uncomfortable. The birds and then the titans falling out of the sky in a similar way was noteworthy. The Attack Titan being presented in the last 3 shots of the OP as a monstrous ghostly demonic grayed-out figure lunging into battle with the show giving us a new set of protags from Marley, coupled with the way this show does foreshadowing is grim…ngl lol. I don't have any thoughts on ED. Like Moostache was sayin, that might have more meaning to me later. Sorry for the long post. Excited to finish this story with you guys <3
