BOLDcast FruitsBasket S2E25 UNCUT REACTION

And here is Fruits Baskets’ worst kept secret! I was so glad you two went into it 100% blind, because about half the people who went in watching it back when it was airing basically were already spoiled either before getting into it, or somewhere along the way in a random comment under their videos xP There’s a lot of theories about why the curse started breaking out of the blue (since it’s never actually revealed explicitly), but one of the biggest is that the curse was already weak to begin with (the dragon being a seahorse, etc) and it just kinda happened untimely (along with maybe more environmental factors that could have aligned with it). Kureno’s curse reveal also changes some things as I remember reading back in the day that the curse felt almost omnipotent—a force that an outsider can’t even think of touching. I honestly didn’t think Tohru would been able to break it because of just how out of hand it kinda is, and what was likely the intent by emphasizing Akito’s personal hold on the crew. But Kureno’s curse breaking sets in that it actually is possible to break, but more so that the curse that was so omnipotent to the readers had already begun to break LONG before the story even began. One of the biggest themes of Fruits Basket revolves around feminity, and Akito constantly presenting as masculine (even refers to herself as ‘boku’ constantly, as well as vague implications of her worsening health to stunt growth) is (makes it more evident next season) a self rejection of her own personal view of femininity and the lengths she goes to reject it completely—be it in herself, or within other women. It also strengthens the Tohru-Akito foils involving femininity and general relationships (that definitely builds up more as the story goes on, post reveal as well), as you two are already well aware of. There’s definitely a lot of recontextualization that goes on with the reveal though—especially involving those who knew of her identity.
