Hello there dear Patrons,

in this inspirational post I'd like to show you some works of my favourite 20th century fashion designer.

Charles James was an English-American designer born in the early years of the previous century.

He started his professional career by producing hats, since he lacked money at that time. He was well educated though, and tried practicing many arts and crafts. After he made some profit selling hats, he moved to New York and started to design gowns for his clients.

He is most famous for his sculptural approach to gown design. His pieces often consist of several layers of structure and other elements that create the final shape of the gown. Many of them include specially designed boning, padding, waist tapes, crinolines and tons of tulle creating a breathtaking silhouette.

My favourites are probably "The Butterfly" and "The Swan" but all of his works are always most inspiring for me.

Have a great week!

K.

These are quite stunning creations, Kozakowy, although I would question the colours chosen for some of them. I really like the beautiful red rouched dress in number 2 and I really like number nine, although I think the colour could do with a re-think, because all I can think of is a cheap chocolate bar! I have to confess that while his Butterfly and Swan are wonderfully imagined, they seem rather "overblown" in my eyes...oh, and why did he reverse the box-pleats in his constructive illustration?

I think that the box pleats can be used as something that adds volume and a bit of stiffness to the skirt and also makes the outer fabric lay down smoothly not showing any of the horizontal bones of the crinoline. That's my guess ;) Not all of these gowns are my cup of tea as well, but he's the one who had really pushed the couture to the limits.

Thank you very much for this wonderful tour. Indeed, truly magnificent dresses! Hahah.. I beg your pardon for my ignorance, but besides the works of Karl Lagerfeld and the crazy desig of Dior, I didn’t really know anyone ... why be cunning here ?! It is very interesting to broaden your horizons. Especially in historical fashion. Most of all I liked the design of the dress in the eighth and ninth pictures.

I'm happy that you enjoyed this brief presentation :) the designs that you liked are a Evening Gown project and the Swan, which is also one of my faves. I'd also like to model one of his gowns one day :)
