Hey everyone, welcome back to another video! Today we're diving into a hot topic, the Pitchmap Colors plugin by Zynaptic. It's essentially the cheaper, simpler sibling of the original Pitchmap, which I often talk about on this channel. So let's get right into the key points:

  • Cost & Target Audience: One of the main complaints about the original Pitchmap is its cost; it's around $400. Pitchmap Colors was introduced as a more affordable option, targeting color-based producers who primarily use it to correct bass overtones. It's priced at $99.
  • Feature Differences: This newer version is stripped-down. Missing are the matrix, threshold, field, purify, glide, electrify, and various algorithm changes. However, it still aims to correct pitches or harmonics to a scale you set.
  • User Interface: It's definitely not a boomer plugin. The interface is more modern, with descriptors like "sick" and "insane". You have a piano roll to dial in the notes you want to correct and can even use MIDI input for dynamic changes.
  • Controls & Options: The plugin offers Low Cut, High Cut, Min Pitch, and Max Pitch options to exclude certain frequencies from correction. You can use snapshots to quickly switch between scales. There's also an option to shift the whole scale up or down by up to two octaves.
  • Use Cases:Bass Sound Correction: Useful for correcting the overtones in your bass sounds while keeping the fundamental frequencies untouched.
Radio Material: Great for taking random radio material and pitch-correcting it to use as a sample source.
Grid Experiments in Bitwig: Ideal for ordering overtones when working with highly atonal material.
Eurorack: A great fix for the out-of-tune issues that can crop up with Eurorack setups.
Percussion Sounds: Acts almost like a spectral resonator to bring tonality to your drums.
  • Sound & Tonal Changes: It alters the tonality of the pitch correction. There are several options to further tweak the sound, such as "FMT Gamma".
  • Downsides: The plugin uses iLok, which might not be everyone's cup of tea.
  • Not Just for Vocals: While it can be used on vocals, I find it more useful as an audio effect for sound design and sample creation.

That's a lot to take in, but hopefully, it gives you a good overview of what Pitchmap Colors has to offer. I got a free NFR license for this, but just to be clear, I'm not affiliated with Zynaptic.
