Besswarden did not understand the hopping rodents, not all of them at least.

Most species on the Station lived in the standard habitation blocks, enjoying the spacious accomadation of the halfway deserted research craft as it travelled slowly to it's target over the last few weeks. Some, such as those belonging to the two species that orignally built the Station even enjoyed it's origenal configuration where they lived, complete with swimming pools in all rooms. However, the Springhares did things didferent.

Certainly some of the Springhares lived as expected, often one a room, and sometimes in out of the way places far from other habitations. However then there were the other group. There was no real difference physically between the two, but Besswarden hd come to understand the queues of outlook and attitude differences. Most importantly, he had come to realise this second type of Springhare appeared to prefer to reside in one specific location while on duty and unused as Springhare kits: Besswardens Locker.

In a way he did not particularly understand why the instincts of these rodents were to bundle themselves into the locker of a natural predator species, though he did suspect it was something to do with some strange trust they had in him. They could remain in any pace they wised for pickup, and many indeed did. However there were always a few springhares in his locker, waiting for his choosing while using the locker as a combination of recreation and unisex changing room.

After some time, though, he had grown accustomed to this way of life. Where once he was surprised by the pile of rodents infesting his locker, and caught off guard by the lack of clothing sometimes seen as they change outfits, in later days he simply opened the locker, and grabbed the nearest Springhare (usually Ceylon) in the same manner one might pick vegetabls in the supermarket before wandering off. The others always seemed happy with the outcome, and not once had they protested when plucked out like the component in a lunchtime buffet to work in some random part of the station together.

Besswarden had heard of other folk on the station also having their lockers and drawrs infested with Springhares, though they hadsd slowly become less through mismatchings in personalities as well as the stations Grimalkin and errent beasts sticking noses into such lockers and lazilly swallowing down lump after lump into it's belly.

As such, while Besswarden did not fully understand these small rodents he did appreciate the unspoken trust they deemed to haver for him
