Hi my dear friends,

Just a little update, that the guy from the BBC hasn't quite gotten back to me on when he'd like to do the interview. In the meantime, I've decided to write my own post while waiting, because he's only going to quote me selectively anyway, and I'd like a place where all my thoughts are consolidated, around this topic.

Therefore, I've got a Dear kfangurl post going up on the blog tomorrow (10 hours from now), on the question, "Why is Squid Game so popular?"

Just found this article about the English Translations on Netflix have not been done so well which does really surprise us. However, with the international success of the Show, I wonder if they will go back and fix the translations - https://screenrant.com/squid-game-english-subtitles-translation-vs-dub-which-better-watch/

Still considering dipping my toe. KFG, I look forward to hearing how it falls on the violence, etc., scale in your review to see if it’s going to be something I will be interested in.

@Lois - Hi! I had severe FOMO and decided to dip my toe in the water and I am glad and not glad I did at this point. The scenes during the games were way too much for me, but I did not find them gratuitous at all. They served the story and stayed in line with the story from what I can tell. However, I bailed after Episode 3 after I employed heavy use of the Mute Button and the FF function on my remote after Episode 1. The game was too much for me. Way too much. I get sucked in emotionally with Kdramas as we all do and based on the visuals of the game world, it was too hard to pull myself out emotionally. The set design reminded me of the movie Fifth Element which is from a French director some of us have mentioned in past posts. I am not sure if to call the game center surrealistic or hyper-realistic or what. Bold colors, big design, intense, yes. Struggling for the right word of that set for the game. I am very glad to see though it was a true Korean Drama and not a Western influenced Kdrama as some of the Netflix Originals have seemed to be headed in that direction. After Epi 3, I read all the synopsis for the upcoming episodes and where it was going and thought I am done. After connecting us emotionally to the characters, even though its just a story, I couldn’t go there emotionally with the characters' journeys anymore. I really do think the Show is very well done, thoughtful, thought provoking and I hope more good comes out of this Show instead of churning out more of these type of Shows.

I'm not surprised at all that the subtitles are "off". Viki uses a team, and while it can be nerve wracking when a new person on the team takes over because the characters' names romanization may change - to get an accurate translation requires more than one set of eyes. (And while my Korean is still at the newbie stage, there were times, even to me, where I see the translations aren't right on Netflix kdramas.
