Just curious what your thoughts are on this. 1080P takes nearly twice as long to render vs 720P so I just wanted to see how everyone feels about it.

Should I stick with rendering at 1080P or should I drop down to 720P? 720P will speed up rendering a bit. Depending on how fast I animate, that may or may not speed up the final animation. Here's a scenario...

Lets say, I complete 3-7 scenes in a week (thats my goal depending on the complexity of the scene). If I have a busy week where I finish, lets say, 6 scenes, that's probably 160+ hours of rendering at 1080p. So, unless I am rendering perfectly (exactly when the previous renderings finish) I will fall behind on rendering. Over the course of the entire animation, this may even out by the end or I may get stuck a week or two behind. Its hard to explain exactly why but 1080P will probably cause some sort of delay in the end. Maybe a few days, maybe a couple of weeks. Its really hard to say.

However, at 720P, I should be able to safely stay caught up with rendering each day after I animate a scene.

Anyway, my gut says stick with 1080P but I wanted to check with everyone first and get their thoughts.

Yeah, I'm inclined to say stick to 1080p, speaking purely for myself, I'm willing to potentially wait a little longer for the higher quality 😄

Honestly I don't have much of a preference maybe just whats easier on you while still keeping you happy about the final product. Non-answer I know but I'm not inclined to nit pick a product I enjoy so much.

As someone who once thought DVDs were "future-proof"... you should probably stick with 1080p. 720p looks good enough now, but in 2 years? Probably not. Personally, I think the corner to cut for faster animation renders would be FPS... my 2 cents.

I suggest dropping to 720. The quality is still high (if not the highest), but you will allow for a wider audience with slower machines (and faster rendering with mobile data streaming), which means moar money! $$$ <3

maybe release things as 720 first and then when you work on the next project like AML5, you can let 1080 render for AML4 while you do animating work or ask questions about the upcoming stuff. From the appearance of the scenes so far, imo i dont know why people would like 1080 since its not like these videos are final fantasy tier, i like seeing the final product and Agent Red's work. I like the subject matter of these vids more than a finely polished appearance.

Honestly the difference between 720 & 1080 is barely noticeable and in some cases non-existent depending on the TV/monitor size, yet 1080 takes TWICE as long to render. For anyone who's interested just Google "difference between 1080p and 720p" and look at what comes up as a picture is worth a thousand words. In most cases 1080p only gives a *tiny* increase in quality, and then only if you're watching on a big TV (40+ inches) so the question is weather that tiny increase in quality is worth doubling the rendering time. Personally I don't think that it is.

Agree with bigwiggy

It depends on the quality of your textures and polygon count (at render time). Without knowing either I would say stick to 1080p

Terry

Can you give us a sample of both so we can see the difference? Thanks!

My models are not highly detailed but I dunno I am leaning toward just staying 1080P anyway

AgentRedGirl

Id love to do that but that would delay AML5 because a whole animation is literally like 60 days worth of rendering =/

OH so, I really wanted to switch to 24 FPS, and I think I will give it a shot for AML5. I have just been animating at 30 FPS and I am just a little nervous about switching but I think I will make the change for the next part.
