yayyy

Nova Amore

Hope your audition went well!💖💖

if it helps, ground and iland members will change throughout the show. Sunoo going to ground doesn’t mean that he’s no longer apart of the lineup. It’s sort of like if an iland member does poorly, then ground members will be able to get picked to take their spots, and the Iland members will go to ground. I hope that explains that part of the rules a bit better??🥺

Kiwi Space

I agree with you on the whole leadership situation. For me, I would have kept Heeseung has the center and just chose a different leader or again keep Heeseung has the center and just talk on how to improve the team atmosphere and what could better done. Ni-ki for me in this episode wasn't looking at the bigger picture and only focusing on himself. When it comes to idol groups, he'll have to learn that you can't just depend on dancing because even main dancers know how to hold down a couple of notes. BUT I give him leeway because he's never experienced something like this and age. Looking back at this now, you can see the improvement of not only skills but character of the Enhypen members. ❤

I agree that this performance was very weak. No facial expressions, singing was slightly below average, you could just tell the nerves where there. But to be fair they didn't have any coaches and were just going off what they previously know, so I think they did a great job in that aspect. I really wish I-LAND focused a little bit more on the vocal side of things. There is barely any focus on vocal technique and absolutely no rapping occurred on I-LAND. TURNS OUT HALF OF ENHYPEN CAN RAP VERY WELL BTW. I sure wish I-LAND focused on the vocals just as much as the dancing + teamwork.

R.S

That block b performance forever shocks and haunts me...where did the rap come from???

Anonymous

I think to be fair Ni-ki did get a lot of evil editing from mnet throughout the show also he did make mistakes but pls remember he is only 15 here

Iris Lee

whenever i watch this first performance, i can't take my eyes off from jungwon. his voice is soooo good... and doing the dance moves like that while singing like that? personally i think he is the ace in this performance :) so glad to see new episode btw, i was waiting for this!

It’s really funny how until the end I’ve liked the ground boys more than I-land ones. Their energy is so cool and pure. While watching the whole show when it aired sometimes I wish they switched roles and gave all grounders a huge opportunity

SB

When they said "there's no chance to debut while you're on the ground" they meant that if you want to debut, you need to work hard in order to be switched with someone from I-LAND, if you can't do so and remain in the GROUND, there's no chance for you to debut as those who'll remain in the GROUND till the end will be sent away and won't access the second half of the competition reserved only to the 12 trainees that managed to stay in I-LAND.

Jenn BL

K will always be my boy! Come on Japanese unit hurry up and debut!

Mahima

only one word : JIGEUM BUTEO

Sandy Cai

Yeah, they could've just decided as a group on whether to change the specific choreography or not do the individual dance evaluation rather than kind of blaming heesung. Coz you are in the I-LAND, belong to the 12 and you should be confident to dance the choreo on your own and also be open to being checked or corrected by the group since they will all be graded individually and as a group

lovelypgw

yes, finally someone appreciating K’s voice! his vocal skills are so underrated!

Alex P

I-Land has to be my favorite adaptation of The Lord of the Flies...

AmyY927

The duo you were talking abt in the performance were K & Jungwon! Next episode K’s and Jungwon’s character and talents start to be revealed :D those two are my fave trainees so I may be a little biased but super excited to see what you think about those two!!

Matt Vesliño

This show's a highkey emotional rollercoaster for sure, excited for you to see all of the trainees! Personally a huge fan of K, Sunoo, and Heeseung!

Shaddow

geonu's voice was so underrated in this ep, he was the best one in the ilanders in terms of geting the high nots correctly in my opinion

camille

14 actually but yeah Ni-ki has come a long way and I don't think he was ever malicious in I-Land

Samantha

So a few thoughts I've had about this episode/Heeseung's leadership style this early on in the season because this is my fifth??? (i think???) time watching I-land: (First off, the trainees were the ones who came up with the idea that the center and leader were the same which is sooooooo not true to the working world of idols so I think that that right there is a decision that ends up doing a lot with fucking up group dynamics for a while in this show.) Number 1: fuck mnet and their evil editing. They made it look like so many of the trainees like fully hated Heeseung or were only interested in using his talent to further their own scores in this episode which like is not at all true???? All of the trainees became close throughout the show, not just the ground or i-land groups but all 23 made progress in their interpersonal relationships with each other and mnet fully messed up in showing that on the screen. And then into Heeseung's leadership style in the episode- it was pure BigHit training style that he showed there and honestly I think the other trainees kind of flinched at it because he was one of them, ya know? They didn't like how he broke it all down and pushed in certain ways because like "he's just a trainee like us, what gives him the right" kind of vibes. Some things I really was impressed that he pushed on for the betterment of the group: giving up his leadership AND center role when he got a lot of push back, breaking up the group and making them perform individually bc how else would you find out if you need more work this early on in the competition, and expressing to the group that he told them how he would lead early on when they chose him and yet they still didn't like it once he actually put it into action. I'm sorry but I'm kind of of the opinion that they chose him to lead, let him lead? Like I get where they're coming from but at the same time being this indecisive early on I think actually ended up hurting them for the performance in the end. Things I disagreed with when it came to Heeseung's leadership style: I agree with you, they should not be changing the choreo this early on in the competition let alone without the choreographer there to help/allow it. Also, I get where the other trainees are coming from when they called him out for hanging out with other More Talented trainees because they trained together. They were Heeseung's friends before I-land and the other company were even fully things in their lives. I found it kind of unfair that they judged him for that B U T!!!! he needed to acknowledge their feelings in that moment. They came to him and told him how they felt he was leading them and he needed to respect how they were feeling at that moment. Still, that's defs something that comes with age and maturity that they just didn't have at that moment because they're literal children here. Like Daniel and Niki are 14 here, there's no way they were going to be able to walk the fine line that emotional maturity is, hell most of us adults can't! Still, I do think that most of this episode came down to A LOT of editing on mnet's part because literally none of the trainees let this practice period/leadership style affect them more than just a few episodes moving forward. (And then with Rain's training section, I was just like these boys would never last a day with Seventeen, A.C.E., or BTS's training that they suffered through lmaoooooo. I'll never forget that Seventeen practice singing (for DK and Seungkwan, belting is included in this) by running and sometimes also full on sprinting on the treadmill for literal hours at a time. And I know that all of the members of ACE sing on their runs as well to keep up their stamina. Like yeah none of this is kind for the singer (especially with nearly all of these trainees being literal children), but also doing this kind of work/training is what gets you ready for the performing world.) I swear I'm not gonna leave essays on this show like I did with Kingdom because honestly I look at most predebut competition shows as places to learn rather than full on evaluate for me as a viewer. So like this, Treasure Box, No Mercy, etc. I try not to fully breakdown as opposed to shows like Produce, Queendom, RtK, and Kingdom. Nonetheless, excited to watch this series again with you Jeff! I'm excited to hear your takes on each episode and the show as a whole 😊

Ashlei Arceneaux

Yeah I need you the post the next one STAT! 😂 This is really good! So glad to watch with you! Love your commentary as always!

Kathy N

My thoughts exactly! Him and EJ!!!! Can't wait!

Kathy N

EJ and K were my biases until they were voted off... :( So excited that they'll be a part of Hybe Japan boy group! Loved seeing them in Enhypen's MV

Laura Witter

Jeff - I love your insight and commentary! Looking forward to episode 3.

So they do have vocal coaches to work with (we meet one of them later on) but you have to remember that these guys are split between agency trainees and contestants who are not currently training, so the trainees will naturally be more vocally stable on stage as they've had at least a bit of training and guidance. Also this was just the first test, so the non-trainee's haven't had a lot of time yet to work with the vocal coaches. I think we don't see any of the vocal stuff much because BE:LIFT wanted to focus on the dancing. Also, they did have dress rehearsals, they just weren't filmed for the show.

You should react to the behind the scenes on you tube. Theres a video of the ilanders reacting to the studio version of into the iland and the parts are all different so you can hear more of the others voices, especially heeseung.

amberrr

i always think it was unfair that they just put the leader on heeseung just because he was part one. and honestly i think it was kind of weak that the guy was crying because they had to dance one by one. if you wanna be in the entertainment industry and performing in front of hundreds, you have to go through that at one point. i mean if you go to auditions they're going to do that to you.

Anonymous

i will always be upset about how they got angry at heeseung for the one on one dance part while niki was sitting next to him and commenting the most on their dances the whole time but no one even mentioned him.

Janine

This is super late but I hated how little structure there was for the trainees. In other idol producing shows there were vocal trainers and dance teachers leading them everyday. and helping them. There's no reason they should have to be left to learning by themselves.

Gab Calinog

This is making me feel so sad and awed at the same time. I keep thinking it's like a PBB House 😭. I'm glad I'm watching this here instead on sites lol.

I'm late to your I-Land reactions, but you'll find that the dearth of resources in Ground is what bonded that group closer to each other. That energy was brought into I-Land later. Natural competitiveness seemed to prohibit the I-Land group from bonding in the early stages. I'm not sure if the producers planned/predicted the outcome or if it developed organically - with that large of a group of hormonal young men, I imagine it happened organically. For myself, that positive energy from Ground, although it didn't translate into points for their team to win the tests, it was strong character development. Bang Si Hyuk is a genius in that respect - he retained trainees for a future group, other trainees debuted in another group, or signed with another agency. Good luck to these kids if they can make it in that industry.

Hi, Jeff. I am an avid viewer of yours in your YT channel and had always wanted to watch your I-Land reactions here in Patreon. But Enhypen had so much contents that I had a hard time catching up, moreso binge-watching other stuff so I just got started watching your reactions here just a few days back. Anyways, I love how you explained stuff from your perspective as an artist and a performer yourself and I learned a lot as viewer, as well. Moreover, I got to see this show again and how the contestants behaved in a certain situation here, as well as their choices & decision-making process in a new light. I was a bit biased about my opinions when I was watching this show real-time as an Eggie (this is what I-Land fans call themselves pre-Enhypen) and even after I re-watched this when Enhypen already debuted. But after hearing your thoughts and evaluations, I kinda have a new understanding on a lot of things, so I'm glad I started watching this. And I am only in Ep. 2 for that matter. Haha

You also mentioned that you are kinda of curious as to how Into the I-Land would sound in a different setting (different line distribution, studio version, etc.) I don't know if you've already come this across in Youtube but this has an Applicant studio Version. There you could hear that their voices already improved because it was recorded in the latter part of the show (probably in Ep. 5). Jay started out the song, Heeseung had a lot of lines and he also did the adlibs. Jake, who dropped his mic in the first performance, also got a lot of lines in the studio version. If you're interested, here's a video on who sings a certain part in their signal song just so you could imagine the member singing the part. ☺️https://youtu.be/9kv5aF1qSfE
