This is damn informative! These episodes covered where Kpop originated from, the first idols and why/how exporting talent globally happened. SO MANY INTERESTING INFO.

I thought they were going to release the episodes week to week but they actually already have all the episodes out. I will cover more episodes next week!

EDIT. In the video I mentioned that Sandara Park is half korean-filipino but she is in fact full korean!

It said Joon, Park - Artist, god because the kpop group he is from is called g.o.d 😂

Hi Jeff! If you're also interested in getting to know more of these 90's artists you can also watch EXO90:2014 - it's a variety show wherein the 90s K-pop idols get to visit Exo and discuss music with them. They would also remade music videos from the 90s. ❤ 11 episodes - different idols and artists from 90s. BONUS: Pre-debut NCT (SMRookies) is featured as well! 💚

I always disagree when fans suggest an english version of an album or a song, i just don't know...as a kpop fan for more than 10 years now, I just don't like english versions as much as the original one. Original/korean versions just have that different feel to them. Maybe because that's just what i'm used to. I don't mind if they release a song in english as an original though. H.O.T as far as I know started the gens, so they are the first gens, if you actually think about it, the generation change actually (maybe) depends on SM. Because we are now on the 5th gen and thats probably because we have Aespa now. 1st gen - H.O.T, God, SES, Fin.kl (Hyori is part of this), etc 2nd gen - Boa (not sure), SUJU, SNSD, WG, Big Bang, 2NE1, Shinee, F(x) etc 3rd gen - EXO, BTS, Got7, VIXX etc 4th gen - NCT etc 5th - Aespa

Also the dna necklaces did not actually have blood/hair in them...they used those things to have a necklace that would look like the dna of the member if I remember lol

I agree! SM for me is really the pioneers in Kpop!

omg, when super junior tells about them I always cry. this is because super junior has been with me during those 11 years and they never change. and what makes them special is that they debuted in 2005 and then many problems happened, starting from a car accident that made several members injured and even nearly lost their lives, then some members left the group but they went through it all and are still surviving until now and still making music. they are also seniors who are close to juniors and not only juniors from SM but also other agencies and they are also close and have great respect for their seniors. I hope you get to know Super Junior and it seems like it's fun to watch the SMTOWN concert too or all idols from SM that comes to Knowing Brothers. bc their so funny and have so many fun storys.

Sandara is 100% korean. Her dad uprooted her family to the Philippines for work. While she was still under her ABS CBN contract, YG was scouting her. When she couldnt get more work and a contract renewal, she moved back to Korea to start her training for 2NE1.

This documentary was so informative and nice! I hope there's a Season 2 and hopefully they feature TVXQ and Girls' Generation more on that because I don't think they were featured enough here as compare to how big/great impact they have made in the industry. But I also understand because the time was limited and not all groups can be featured as well. So yeah, we need Season 2! ❤

thank you for sharing this jeff! I’ve been listening to kpop since wonder girls came out but i still learned a lot more and dived deeper into kpop. It just makes me so proud of what it has become and going to be in the coming years!!!

Very cool docu! If you are interested in a short explenation of Kpop History, I would recommend DKDKTVs Video about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPS4tCHT6SA They really did a good job in explaining how Kpop came to be, and how the big 3 companies were formed. :)

Samantha

okay but im so excited to see the fandom episode bc that's where im like pls tear this entire mess apart in front of everyone lmaooooo. can we just cheer forever with ha:felt just full on saying that ppl act like they own idols???? i think too often i run into fans who are delusional and have fully bought into the psychosocial relationship that is being sold by the company and not thinking about the artists as human beings anymore. all in all tho im super impressed with this docu series, i hope that the writers and directors of this one keep up with producing things like this for a ton of different subjects. the way it's organized and edited together is really fascinating!

When Seotaji and the boys came on I was literally going ‘go go go YG, go YG, go YG’ 😂😂😂 still can’t believe YG was main dancer of a Seotaji and the boys

the h.o.t vs sechkies rivalry is so funny to think about now because tony(h.o.t) and jaeduck(sechkies) literally live together like a married couple now and have been for years😂😂😂

doyoung's hat

there always funny when it comes to two hot boy groups sechkies vs h.o.t super junior vs big bang bts vs exo and now probably seventeen vs nct either txt vs stray kids

LisMM

Nah. Suju was after big bang. At the Time it was more TVXQ vs Bigbang. 😉 and seventeen vs nct or txt vs stray kids, I dunno. The market is super saturated now so there’s alot more competition. I will say that after BTS stray Kids and NCT do seem to be the most popular internationally right now. (At least bg wise)

LisMM

I never knew HA:TFELT was from wondergirls lol. I love Dynamic Duo and got to know her since she’s signed to their company. I totally fell in love with her soft rnb vocals and sweet styled music. 🥰

Sarah Zimmerli

it's also funny because Sechskies are the only ones that mention that they were H.O.T's rivals, H.O.T members never talk about them

Louie Gabiliño

Wow, I just started watching but I didn’t know physical albums has been obsolete in the west? Although , I’ve been a kpop fan since 2012 and haven’t ventured to western music since so I really didn’t know.

I had the chance to be at the first SMtown concert in Paris in 2011 and that really was the beginning of diving deep into Kpop and Korean culture. I had listened to kpop for a year before that and was a fan, but really seeing them live was what changed everything for me. I even travelled from Finland to France for it and it was the first time I travelled without any adults so it felt even more important. Since then I have travelled around Europe for Kpop concerts, even going to concerts in Japan when I had the chance. And this all started from seeing Sorry Sorry MV on youtube :D

Natalia Kuroś

I feel so strange watching this XD Last year as a part of my exam about the culture around the world I gad to write an essay. As a topic I've chosen the history of the kpop and how it has come to be as it is. I know everything that they are talking about in the video ^^' I also know the answer to your question Jeff about Seo Taji and boys :P

Anonymous

Sorry sorry was like the open gate for suju and kpop to be wide known. I remember in 2010, my friend played super junior's sorry sorry MV in class. And all of the girls like became kpopers on the next day (including me) hahahhaa.

Hi Jeff! In episode 4: Fandom, there are spoilers for Produce 101 Season 2 (ex. Final group name, 3-4 members will be in the clips). Letting you know in case you want to avoid it since you’re still halfway through the season haha

RisingSunbebe

I was there in Paris back in 2011 - it was my first kpop concert and it was a huge thing back then... I mean I traveled all the way from Serbia and it was unbelievable to see my favorite kpop stars in Europe. Oh btw Seo Taiji lived in USA and then brought the style to Korea. I can't wait to see more of this with you haha

Heenim Mura

I aggree with u. We don't need them to produced songs in our language before supporting them. I mean, I'm a french speaker and a huge SUJU fan but I don't need suju to speak French before loving them. That's why I'm sad becoz some kpop groups feel like they need to make an english song to international fans love. NO. If we were looking for english songs, there are a lot of western artist out there. We don't need them to do that.

Tra Mai

wow I'm actually extremely sad the fact that they did not include BIGBANG at all because of their "scandals". Considering the tremendous contribution BIGBANG did to Kpop, this documentary is disappointing to watch.
