Yes! I've been waiting for this. I'm gonna leave my shoes here then come back later. But first... I'm gonna hit like. I always say this but I'm gonna say it again, I really like your content ❤️

Whoo I've been waiting for this. I watched this with my mom when it came out and she didn't know if I have any favs appearing on the show. Her pick was Taemin and then Ten for her favorite performances. There were comments that there was audience/voting bias towards Taemin since he used his own song. It should be noted that Sayonara Hitori (the orig Japanese vers) was released after the filming of the show. In fact the album came out on the same day ep1 of HtS premiered. The only people who have been exposed to the song before the rehearsal was his dance partner and choreographer Koharu. The lyrics for the Korean version are different to the Japanese and it can be interpreted to the theme of 'Devil' within oneself. He later performed the song on korean music shows for a week after ep2 was aired.

Tayarisa

You should totally react to Taemin's 2016 MAMAs performance

jeffavenue

Ohh I didn’t mind that he used his own song. This is a competition and if that gives him the advantage then by all means. They gotta play! Lol

claireisuche

basically dancers come and go depending on thier schedules. after each theme, it resets and they start over

Anonymous

To make it simple, just take each 2 episodes as their own competition instead of the entire show. So each theme will have a different line up and a separate ranking. Some artists are recurring while others are not. Usually, though, when someone gets first place they’re not in the next line-up.

camille

I really applaud Hyoyeon for showing many new sides of herself on this show. Though she is most known for popping, she seems very well rounded and has a strong love for all dance. The couple dating is probably Feeldog and Bora from a later episode. Shownu was new but still his concept surprised me. He did seem in his head since his eyes weren't focused and he looked down a lot.

Anonymous

This was fun!! I definitely would say that SHINee and Infinite are of the same caliber, both groups being very popular for their addicting choreography and synchronization. Taemin and Hoya are both the main dancers in their respective groups as you probably know already. Looking back though, I did feel that there was a little apprehension from the audience in regards to them voting for Ten. He deserved more votes, but it also didn't help that he was first. Idk, I feel sometimes that the audiences on Korean competition programs gloss over newer idols or groups simply because they don't know much about them. But again, this was really fun! Looking forward to the rest of the reactions.

camille

I agree about the "nervousness" before going on stage. For me there's many factors: If it's small scale in front of family or judges, then I get nervous. If I'm alone I also get nervous. But especially if it's a big stage with my team and I feel prepared then it's definitely not nervousness but excitement and adrenaline.

rbygee

Taemin and Ten were def the standouts for me. If Ten had performed later than U-kwon imo he would have beat him - as other ppl have mentioned, I feel like U-kwon barely even danced. Sayonara Hitori/Goodbye was a Japanese release, which usually doesn't get any clout in Korea at all, but thanks to this performance the amount of idols covering and trainees using Goodbye/SayoHito as an audition piece in practically all the idol survival shows that came out in the next years skyrocketed lol. Hoya is third but he just came across too strong, to say the least lol. But with a grain of salt since Mnet loves to create drama.

jeffavenue

I think they value age and experience a lot in SK. But I’m glad they appreciated him a lot even tho he’s newer (with the celeb panel giving him the highest score).

jeffavenue

Oh yes! Different circumstances for sure! I find I’m most comfortable when I’m REALLY prepared too!

jeffavenue

Yeah he gave them a lot of material to edit into a narrative 😂 I love the confidence tho 👍🏽

Sham Sham

My list is Taemin, Ten, U-Kwon, Momo, Hoya, Bora, hyoyeon, then shownie bear. I can’t remember any performances after this ep so I can’t wait to rewatch it with you. But I do remember ten being a full mood the next episode 😂

jeffavenue

Haha ya it feels like this episode is the most popularly suggested too. I have a feeling the following episodes will be better since they know where the bar is now!

Like always really enjoyed your reaction and comments! I can't wait for you to see all the great perfomances from the coming episodes :) Btw at first when I watched the show I also was kind of confused about how the lineup works, but it seems like when a person wins most of the time they don't come again on the next episode. As you could tell there are also some other ones that are new, on one side it might be a schedule thing, but it seems like the show is supposed to be kinda open and focusing on one concept round, meaning that a variety of other idols also can showcase their dancing. The majority of the lineup does stay the same though and just a few people (maybe around 2-3) change. A few of the originals where there pretty much throughout the whole show maybe just skipping one ep at times.

elise

My fav were Ten, Taemin and after I don't really know maybe Hoya/Hyoyeon. The problem in this show in my opinion is the Public vote, yeah it's great that they vote but it's also bad in a way. Public vote will be based on popularity sometime and for Ten I think that what happen here (+ beside the fact that he was first) . Ten at that time just debuted a few days ago, the public didn't really know him so I think it's played a lot. For the next lineup, a lot of people already explain how it's work so here I will just gave you the news contestant for the next episode : - Chunhga (You already knew her, when she joined this show she just finished PRODUCE 101 and was in I.O.I ) - Jang Hyunseung came to this show after leaving the group he was in aka BEAST or now called HIGHLIGHT (they left CUBE ENT and created their own label so they had to change their name). He was also in the duo TROUBLE MAKER with Hyuna - FEELDOG (ex BIGSTAR), one of my favorite dancer. It's him who finished by date Bora at the end of the show (they are not together anymore), you will also see in the next episode his friendship with Hoya because they know each other since a long time now . Also I already talked about him because he went after to the survival show THE UNIT. FEELDOG is one of my favorite dancer unfortunately he finished in a company who can't promote their group well. He could've shine more if BRAVE ENT didn't put him and his group BIGSTAR on the side. -- She is just the partner of U-kwon but you will see Yooa (labelmate of ONF) . She was the one who was in the performance of THE MUST WE LOVE with ONF

BaoziBang

My favorite thing about the next episodes are Feeldog X Hoya. Their Friendship is HILARIOUS!

My personal ranking is: Taemin, Ten, Hoya, U-Kwon, Bora, Momo, Hyoyeon, Shownu. I agree that the format is confusing. Back when it aired I only saw the performances, and like with RTK I preferred watching the dances without the cuts to the audience. So also like with RTK I'm watching the show as a whole for the first time "with" you. It's fun. Next theme This love has my nr 1 favorite performance from the show, exited to see what you think about it ;) But won't say which one it is now. I'll comment about that on that video.

non

One of the guys in Hoya’s crew is the choreographer for NCT 127’s Kick It. He’s from 1Million dance studio, he wasn’t as well know back then as he is now

hayun lee

everybody already explained it, but if you were wondering about the random focus on hyunseung in this episode its because he'd just recently left his group beast (now called highlight) and generally was seen to be a controversial celebrity who was out of the limelight for a little while. iirc this was one of his first broadcasts coming back

Anonymous

My ranking for the Devil'sperformances is still Ten at #1 and Hoya a close 2nd, the variety and creativity in Ten's dance holds him at number 1 for me. For Ukwon, Taemin and Momo they're all high up for me I'm so bad at ranking I pretty much know I think Ten deserved #1!

milky

lol its funny you say Taemain's performance seems like a MAMA performance because he actually ended up performing part of this dance and song at MAMA 2016

Layla123

I really like watching this show again and rediscovering it - I remember I never bothered to watch the full show but only the performances so the series you're doing is really fun! This is also reminding me of how much I love most of these idols, especially ones like Hoya. I was such a huge Infinite fan back in the day, Hoya was one of my biases, and seeing him here again is such a happiness boost omg. He honestly did have so many issues with Woollim and the whole idol setup and I wasn't surprised when he left Infinite, but really sad because he added to Infinite in such a crucial and wonderful way. I'm halfway through your reaction but just wanted to say - when you talked about Lee Hyori and Rain being big - the two of them are actually going to do a co-ed group with Yoo Jaesuk haha! Hyori and Rain are still trending currently in SK - a cover Hyori did a few weeks ago revitalised a two-year old song and made it eligible for music show wins this week, and Rain is everywhere on variety at the moment - and the three of them are going to 'debut' as SSAK3, an idol group lol https://www.soompi.com/article/1407414wpp/yoo-jae-suk-rain-and-lee-hyori-show-off-their-new-style-in-photos-ahead-of-co-ed-group-debut - for more context! It's honestly hilarious :P

jeffavenue

Ahhh that makes sense. Once they’ve gotten the trophy it’s like ok I’m done haha

jeffavenue

Yeah I think for survival shows, i get public vote but this is the one show that it should’ve been just the panel. This show is primarily made to showcase people’s dancing not necessarily to gain a career like other survival shows.

jeffavenue

Whaat a coed group??? Omg omg omg 😱 - I’m also glad you’re enjoying this series with me! So many shows we can all enjoy together!

Fatima

Ok honestly I'm not just saying this just because Ten is my bias like being very objective I think Ten should have been first or second in this episode. And regardless of where he landed in other episode after his performance in my personal rankings he was always first or second. I remember feeling like that when I first watched this when it came out and even now although it''s just the beginning I still feel like that. I went to the SuperM concert in November and I knew Ten was an amazing dancer but I was completely mesmerized seeing it in person. He was one of the most beautiful dancers I have ever seen. Of course Kai and Taemin were there as well but I used to think they were on a higher tier than him cause its them lol but he showed me he was up there with them which is wild since hes a few years their junior, it just shows his talent.

Sarah Zimmerli

I don’t know if someone already explained it but this isn’t your normal survival show with one final winner. Each round will have a different winner. Like you already noticed some new contestants joined and others left. Now this is completely out of context but you mentioned that a couple was formed on this show, you are right but it’s not the people you mentioned. The couple is Bora and Feeldog, Feeldog will join the show next week. You should be really excited for him because he‘s an underdog. His group isn’t well known but in the industry they know that he’s one of the best dancers. Also you mentioned Kai, this show was recorded/aired when Exo had their busiest year. In 2016 Exo had two comebacks (one being double titled), a tour and they released a special music video for charity, Kai simply had no time for this show.

jeffavenue

I agree! For someone newer to come in and then play with the biggest dancers of kpop is no joke! 👏🏽👏🏽

Holly

i feel like it was a bit of a disadvantage that ten had to go first, if he went later i feel like the audience would have kind of established a standard for their voting? if that makes sense? like if i was an audience member i may have thought i needed to 'conserve' my vote near the beginning because i didn't know how good/bad the later performances were gonna be. not to say the others were bad (i legit got chills in every single one of the performances) but i definitely think ten deserved higher, this performance is probably one of my favorites on hit the stage!! i do think taemin deserved first however, he performed the genre he does best and u can SEE why he's known for that kind of dance- no one does it like him!! i love watching shows like this where idols can show off their full potential by themselves, i always come to appreciate their talents even more! :) i'm so excited for you to see some of the upcoming performances- some of my personal favorites coming up including u-kwon/yooa's collab and mina/momo's stage!!

jeffavenue

Totally great observation! I think that played a huge part on voting with ten. I guess it’s safe Ten set the standard quite a bit lol. I would’ve been happy between Taemin and ten. And who knew they would later be working together!

In Taemin's performance, there were several times I felt like his partner was stealing the show--she's amazing! (Not that he isn't, but I was surprised by her talent.)

Cam C.

She really is amazing, isn't she! She choregraphed Taemin's "Move", and she has many very good and fun videos on the YT channel "Urban Dance Camp" if you search that with her name "Koharu Suguwara" :)

Anonymous

I think it was bora and feeldog that ended up dating

PositiveThinking

This was fun to watch again and hear your comments! For me Taemin was #1, becuase of the emotional maturity. Ten was #2 - his performance blew me away, I hadn't been familiar with him before this show and was really impressed. However I thought the emotions were kind of over the top in a way that felt slightly immature. Don't think I would have even noticed that as a problem unless I was comparing to Taemin... Ten got screwed by going 1st, especially as it was the first episode so the auidance didn't know what to expect. The format, with the in-house audiance voting after each performance is the same as immortal-songs (if you are familiar with that show) - That show is a good model to see the importance of performance order. There have been about 450 episodes, with 6-7 competitors in each. I think the first performer won only 3 times. I think there is a slight point inflation as the audiance warms up, so going last does give you the best chances of winning, but it's not a significant difference past the 2nd performance. Going first is almost a death sentance though.

PositiveThinking

BTW, a lot of people think the audiance voting is biased - influenced by the artists' popularity. I don't think that is true. Even if you come in liking certain artists, when you are actually physically in the presence of the other artists, you see them as real hard-working people. I think that forces people to put the bias aside. As evidance, popular artists like Hyoyeon, didn't scrore as well as almost compeletly unknown artists like Ten.

PositiveThinking

OK, can't stop commenting... I do suspect the show did a bit of subtle manipulation: First, they really wanted Taemin on the show, as someone the general audience in Korea knows and acknowledges as a great dancer. They said the head PD even called him up personnaly to beg him to be on the show. However he was busy getting ready for his Japanese debut and didn't really have time. I don't think it is by chance that the theme (devils) happened to fit the song he was preparing for his Japanese debut, allowing him to just adapt that choreo. Also the performance order being decided by a silly ghost prank - Anyone who knows Taemin (and everyone in the K-entertainment industry knows him) knows that he is not going to be scared of somethng like that. Show him a bug though... You will see in the next episode, after Taemin is gone they pick a different game to pick the order, this time favoring Hoya.

kai

Taemin truly deserved it idc what anyone says you can say it was biased all you want but no one can perform like that man

Anonymous

its so cool that you know "old" k-pop) also great reaction!

Anonymous

I like your thoughts about nervousness. I'm not a competetive dancer, but I do competetive sports (equestrian). I also have to memorise kindof a choreo for competitions. I don't get nervous, but anxious is a good word for it.

Morag

Honestly, I agree with you completely about Hyunseung and Chunghas performances. Stephanie was completely highlighted and his choice of clothing did not help..at all. Chungha did very well but it was a little flat for me. I do disagree a bit about Ten and Ukwon.

Anonymous

The show was a bit too messy, not having fixed members, judges are not always pro dancers. Ten would have definitely ranked higher if not going first. Taemin just went to the first battle and then disappeared. Taemin not only has the maturity and the skills but also he works really really hard, he is a perfectionist! A true artist! Ten is also getting there just needs more experience.

Cat R

I don't mind the change in line up, these are all celebrities and idols so schedules won't always match up and it's hard to commit a large chunk of your time to a specific program so artists being able to leave the show and new ones getting a chance to participate or even some dancers staying on to show more is pretty good in my opinion. I do agree though that the fact that instead of celebrity judges they should have had professional dancers as judges for this show, it's supposed to be about the dancing so I don't understand why they have comedians, actors, mc's, ect. on as judges. Personally, my top two for the Devil's theme is Ten and Taemin, it's hard to choose which one I would place first as I love both of them and both performances had their own merits.

Anonymous

funny that you should mention that Taemin's dance was something you'd see at MAMA's because it was the finishing song in his trilogy at MAMA 2016. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYnEEGGKd-8

Victoria

taemin definitely deserved to win in my opinion, i enjoyed taemin's dancing the most out of everyone.

Anonymous

I'm only watching this now because I just recently subscribed to your Patreon but I watched this show when it came out and now, too, there is no question for me that Taemin's performance was the best. I do understand and agree with your opinion on Ten's performance but personally, for me, the details about having tricks or not are out the window when a performance takes your breath away like the way Taemin did here. I would put Ten and Hoya on second. I can't choose between the two of them because I felt like although, Ten did "more" - for the lack of a better word - but Hoya felt more detailed about his body movements, more smooth in a way. Maybe mature is the right expression. But Ten today is more than just on their level now, I feel there was just a little something missing that he definitely found now.

Lena

Taemin was busy preparing for his Japanese debut, so he most likely did not have time to perform other choreographies while he's simultaneously promoting for his song. I do agree though that having professional dancers would've been better as they would be able to judge their performances based on technical skill and factors as opposed to how much of a "wow" factor the performance had. There were some dancers in there, previous 1st gen dancers like Bae Yoos Jung. And I believe they did have fixed members, only a couple of them changed throughout the duration of the series.

Tra Mai

it was Bora and Feeldog (who appears in the later episodes) ended up dating after this show
