Great reaction. Obviously this episode is a kind of culmination of things we were piecing together from hints they dropped. If you had a different impression of how Peter died, that's sort of their plan -- this is the first time we've been given all the details. One thing about our glimpses of the other universe is the differences the writers have given it. Some are big and political, of course. Some are visually obvious, like zeppelins still being a big thing over there. And some are little in-jokes. Like BACK TO THE FUTURE, which we saw was playing in theaters (as it did in the 80s). But in that universe Eric Stoltz actually got to make the movie. In ours (and this is true, you can look it up), Stoltz was fired a month into filming and replaced by Michael J. Fox.

Peter from the alternate universe was always supposed to live...and he would have if the observer hadn't come in and distracted Walter while he was creating the cure in the lab. When the observers were all talking outside the movie theater, the one who distracted Walt acknowledged his mistake and the others assured him he'd have a chance to "fix it" (i.e., save Peter, since Peter would've been saved before if not for his interruption). Remember, the observers are "all seeing/knowing" -- they can see the past and the future. They knew Walt from our world would come to rescue Peter, and that the accident at the lake would happen as a result. So they knew the accident would be the perfect opportunity to interfere and save Peter. Another important tidbit to take away from this episode is that the observers repeatedly say that Peter is "important". We don't know how or why yet, but it's a key detail to remember. The observers are not supposed to interfere EVER... and yet they interfered twice in this episode FOR and BECAUSE OF Peter. So he must be pretty damn important in the grand scheme of things. This is such a great episode. And an important one. It ties together threads from previous episodes and sets up storylines for future episodes and seasons.
