Season 4 was all over the place, but I do love this portion/arc. It's great to see Fred back in the spotlight for a change (for something other than her love triangle) and I think they do a great job of creating that sense of dread and hopelessness she must be feeling once she sees the truth.

Yep, you're right. Season 4 IS all over the place. It's messy and at some points it feels like the writers are just making things up as they go along. I will say though this new arc starting here is actually pretty good. A definite improvement over the Evil Cordy arc imo.

This is the problem - they took way, way too long getting to this point with the beast and the Evil Cordelia nonsense. This is probably the most significant threat in either series, AND it's not just "evil thing is evil", it has an ethos. This arc should have been the whole last 8 or so episodes, rather than the few that it gets.
