the show has subtly shown marco playing cards/gambling throughout the seasons. but yes, this was the first time they really emphasized it being an issue and they could've 100% built it up more. the show put too much emphasis on relationships this season. sean/emma, ellie/jesse, paige/alex, peter with emma and darcy -- 80% of this season was relationship focused. the show definitely got away from focusing on the "issues" this season. and they didn't build up a lot of storylines properly.
