The thing about having two strong independant female characters "fight over" Xander is that they literally have to dumb them down enough to WANT to fight over him. They've always portrayed Willow as the mean girl when it came to Anya and it's more annoying than cute (which is what I'm guessing they were going for) and I've always been Team Anya against all the Willow jabs. I KINDA get where they're coming from cuz neither Willow nor Anya can truly call each other good friends at this point and it is Xander related, but to me it's more to do with Willow being possessive of her bestie and treating Anya like she's not worth anything. The whole point of this episode was for that scene where Xander says he won't choose between them and was "heroic". Girl, please. I'm glad we got a bit of the actual storyline this season at the end of this episode. Can't wait for the next one cuz it's one of my favs!
