this is the episode i always love to reference when the emily gilmore defenders assemble lol i feel so bad for lorelai. emily isn’t an evil person, but she was never and is not a good mother. she has no self awareness. she’s incredibly narcissistic and self centered. she treats lorelai terribly and then gets mad when her daughter doesn’t tell her this immediately? it’s not like she’s made any effort to change her behavior since lorelai came back into her life, either. and then, when lorelai (the child in the relationship) goes out of her way to communicate and take accountability at the end, her only response is “your head is must too big for a veil.” it has to be an insult. no apologies, no nothing. #TeamLorelai always and forever, i’m sorry

What Lorelai said at the end of the episode, how she was scared to tell her mum when something good happens or when something bad happens...that was heartbreaking. Imagine her as a kid and a teenager growing up with that constant fear. No wonder as an adult, up until Chilton, Lorelai had a mostly cut off relationship with her parents. There were other factors, of course, but this is definitely a major one. Her crying and asking Emily why she never cared...she felt that in her BONES that her own mother never cared about her. Do I think Emily is evil? No. But I do think she isn't willing to understand or accept the fact that she's emotionally toxic to her own daughter. I'm also #TeamLorelai.

my heart always hurts for emily and lorelei and the relationship that could have been. i think emily genuinely wants to be close to her daughter but there's all her own trauma and ingrained beliefs holding her back. at her heart she wants that close mother daughter relationship but she keeps lorelei at arms length. in turn now as an adult, lorelei can't understand her mother and connect with her and honestly she's tired of trying and i get it. i think emily has some jealousy when she sees how lorelei and rory are with each other. but in lorelei's mind her mother is just cold and distant and lowkey cruel and i can't blame her because that's the only side of her emily allows her to really see. it's just sad. but this is what i love about the show! the complex mother daughter relationships that span generations. i think that's why this show continues to be so beloved today. it's relatable no matter what stage or age you may be.
