Some answers: The "Mane Six" are young adults, with jobs, responsibilities... Despite their evident emotional immaturity (for the sake of moral lessons and such), they're not kids. MLP seasons tend to follow a structure of a big two-parter premiere, usually featuring a villain, more normal slice-of-life episodes between that rarely tie into anything overarching, with (usually) another two-part Season Finale. The premiere and finale are usually when the big plot-driving things happen, apart from introducing new characters and places and the like. Suffice to say, there isn't generally a serial structure. Most episodes could happen in any order between the premiere and finale and you'd never know. Almost never do we pick up in an episode where the prior episode left off. Sorry if that's at all disappointing, but the series does try to at least built towards its climax in small ways the further it goes.

Pinkie Pie used to be absolutely miserable, numb, and apathetic growing up.
