Why does his skin look like that? Well someone knocked him out, apparently when he was vulnerable, likely drugged him and dropped him off in the desert. Since the previous scene was at night, and this is close to noon judging by the shadows, several hours laying in the desert will create nasty sunburn..... I am assuming if he lost consciousness while vulnerable, he stays that way until he regains consciousness....and we did not see wings until he stood up and he was fully conscious. Welcome to season 3... Some episodes appear to be going nowhere, but while some are kind of fluff or filler, they all have essential elements to the story.

Yours is the best explanation I've read, but I'm still iffy on it. The show has never established that he retains vulnerability while unconscious, but if that is indeed what happened here, it's something the writers probably should have introduced earlier.
