On top of taking on Blender side by side with SFM, I'm contemplating an attempt at 6K versions of Blender/SFM videos in VR. I still need to test if this is actually possible (and feasible), but I wanted to put out some feelers if this is something enough people want and can actually use to make it worth it for our time.

As it stands now my current VR computer can't handle 6K VR, but that doesn't mean I won't make 6K versions for you, our supporters. I'll most likely get a new VR HMD for my Blender computer so that I can properly test 6K VR as well as optimize my workflow, but that's assuming there's a desire for higher resolution videos. If there is I'll put the time and effort forward to make it happen (again, if it's possible AND worth it).

EDIT: To be clear, this would be an additional option. Not everyone has the same standards for what they want in VR. I am talking about adding the option of 6K for SFM and Blender.

6K is a good option but current hardware is not very supportive of this.

DarkDreamsVR

Right. I agree. Personally, I feel that most people who CAN actually watch 5K can probably watch 6K, and I want to get an idea where everyone is at with it. 4K to 5k isn't a noticeable difference, but 6K is. Although VR is still growing slowly, it IS growing in all aspects. I think this would be a way for me to get ahead of the curve with the current technology and still keep SFM relevant given it's limitations in VR. The hardware is limited, but it's there and becoming more apparent as prices drop and technology supplements itself.

I say give it a shot, but don’t stress yourselves out or go broke over it either

The new HP Reverb G2 will have 2Kx2K displays, and will benefit greatly from higher resolution videos. Oculus is also supposed to have a high res headset coming out this fall. ...and I can already see a difference with my current-generation Oculus Quest.

I still use my 1440p phone.

The only thing holding me back is that on the quest, higher res clips lag quite a bit sometimes. But otherwise if there are high and low res options I'm down. You're good at what you do, just dont overload yourselves.

I don't have the hardware (or honestly the need) for 6k, but it seems like it'd be good to have for the future as a higher tier reward for those that'd want it.

DarkDreamsVR

I don't know if I like the idea of putting 6K behind a supporters-only wall. I think it's one thing to give out exclusive animations and studio releases as a way of saying thank you for your support, but only allowing supporters to get 6K versions feels like a kick in the shins. Maybe that's just me being a softy! People tell me all the time I am too easy on others and not cut-throat enough in business. That said, I accidentally rendered my first Blender animation in 8K. Although it wouldn't play because it was too much for my computer to handle, it WAS possible to see it. And LET me tell you... ...8K in VR is a world of difference. You might change your mind if you ever see it in higher resolution. But, as I say way too often, people should be able to do what they want as long as everyone is happy and healthy. And if you're happy with lower resolutions, so am I! To each their own.

Hi, you can make 6k as option, dont need to exclude 4k.

SabitaUsagi

Yeah I think in like a year the hardware accessibility for this and potential 8k might be more common.

If you cant manage the additional storage of uploading both 4K and 6K versions of VR then I would say go for it! For non VR even a single 6K file would be fine.

I patreon Tiaz-3dx too. He recently uploaded a 6K VR which had a massive lag on my high end PC. I am sure the hardware will upgrade with time, but if Dark Dreams VR can manage to upload both 4K and 6K Versions then it is definitely a good idea to get ahead of the curve now and gain valuable experience.

I will VR VR VR

No VR, no more interest

My favourite video player (DeoVR) seems to have issues with anything above 4K. Not always, but sometimes, these files are so heavy, that it has difficulty to play them at their normal speed, even though, I have a high end computer, which I frequently use for heavy tasks (game dev here)! Please consider that. You may need to make more than one version for people, if you up the resolution (I know of another creator who is doing several files). Though, that's not impossible or more difficult, when automating the process.

DarkDreamsVR

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep that in mind in the future. I've been spending a lot of time learning more about encoding and transcoding since taking on Blender, and you'll get to enjoy what I've learned soon enough. Our videos will be smoother, better in quality, and smaller in file size.

6k is better!
