Good morning! Last week's poll ended with Red Dune Deserts winning by about three votes, so that's August's theme - and this is the first map for August, a few days early. It's two overlapping eroded craters in a red sand desert! Isn't it picturesque?

Come to think of it, it might be a sinkhole or old volcanic basin too. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader.

Variants

  • Supporter: Day and nighttime variants of both the martian and ordinary desert. In addition, a set of maps with the craters full of water and the nearby valley transformed into a river are also provided!
  • Enthusiast: Maybe the river doesn't fit, but you still want a crater lake. This is provided! Also included is a set of variants with insectoid hive tunnels dug into the craters. Giant ants/termites are a classic, but did you know that wasps nest underground too? I'm planning on dropping a giant african hornet hive on my group someday.
  • Benefactor: There was a lot of material to work with today. Too many ideas to be passed up: chemical pools in different hues for the martian and normal desert, glacial ice plains variants for everything, an oasis-ier crater lake with reeds and palm trees, a set of maps with an drop po - I mean artifact - set in the middle of one of the craters, and a set of underwater variants! It's almost excessive!

The free map is as usual attached to this post - I've attached free versions of both the martian desert and normal desert, just in case!

Technical Details

  • Resolution: 4,760 x 3,080
  • Map Size: 34x22 tiles
  • Grid Size: 140ppi

Downloads

Supporter: Twin Craters

Enthusiast: Twin Craters

Benefactor: Twin Craters (RAW)

Downloads include all content from the previous tiers. Raw files require 7zip and a good bit of technical knowhow, see raw file master post for details or ask me if you're confused. (You probably don't need them if you don't know what they are!)

Notes

I was panicky while drawing the crater walls, thinking they wouldn't turn out nicely. But now that it's finished, I think this is probably amongst my favorite maps. Just look at that directional lighting on the crater's external sand walls subtly illuminating the contours of the terrain.

Anyways, I think I hit three of the five poll options? Red dune desert, underwater, and snow/ice. Desert maps are funny like that. Maybe I should do more underwater maps. It's just that I don't have kelp or coral or seaweed assets, so it looks a little empty, but it's still cool.

Thanks for reading, hope you like it. Please have a nice day!
