Good morning! Setting the record for the tallest map I've yet drawn by just four squares, this week's map (and the last map for June) is the Forbidden City.

This map is more like two smaller ones joined at the hip, really. I couldn't make up my mind whether to focus more on the courtyards or the tree-lined streets of the eponymous palace, so I ended up doing both and combining them in a way that should allow you to segregate it into only one of the two should you so desire. Just need the courtyard? Cut off the southern section. Just want the street-like section? They'd be nice for an upper-class district, too.

Variants

  • Supporter: The Supporter archive today comes with the Forbidden City map both with and without a canal running down the center; each with a day, night, and rainstorm variant. Greyscale versions of everything are also provided as usual.
  • Enthusiast: In addition to the Supporter-level content, Enthusiasts get an edit stripped of foliage and water, perhaps more suitable for an accidental discovery of a lost city. In addition, red-maple variants with a slightly magical tone and blackened roofs are provided for more spiritual/ethereal places and encounters.
  • Benefactor: The Benefactor package, in addition to all of the above, comes with three special space-themed maps courtesy of a certain someone who keeps asking for astral stuff cough cough. They include an astral-sea variant, a portal with more intense lighting, and an 'ordinary' version with more subdued tones and less explicit magic.

The free map is attached to this post, as usual.

Technical Details

  • Resolution: 6,160 x 2,380
  • Map Size: 44x17 tiles
  • Grid Size: 140ppi

Downloads

Supporter: The Forbidden City

Enthusiast: The Forbidden City

Benefactor: The Forbidden City (Raw: Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3)

Downloads include all content from the previous tiers. If you're after the raw files, all three parts must be downloaded and then extracted together. If your file archive program can extract .7z archives, it can probably also extract multi-part archives!

Notes

Tall maps don't fit well in preview images! And I still don't have enough RAM! I need to order some more soonish.

The rural Japanese/Chinese village thing received quite a bit of support in the impromptu poll too. Maybe I'll work that in in a future month. I wonder to myself if mini-polls are a good idea, maybe they dampen enthusiasm.

Thank you for your attention and for reading!
