Edit: By request, I've attached a reference image containing labels for the function of each room and bath in this map!

Inspired by the bathhouses built by our resident foundation-of-basically-all-European-civilization, I bring you the Roman bathhouse - a public bathhouse built around a natural mineral spring expanded through a drilled well.

Roman bathhouses are separated into several different rooms, each with an important purpose. Pools of different temperatures are the most obvious - the frigidarium (connected to the changing room here) is maintained at a cool temperature, whereas the caldarium is hot. Here, pools have also been included in the tepidarium, which also serves as a pool for sweating - that is, relaxing in a relatively intense heat - as well as serving as a transition between the cool outside and the steaming interior of the baths.

Two different sections of the bathhouse are provided here, split by a servant's chambers for maintaining the furnace heat that supplies the hypocausts underneath the dual tepidariums. If you were to go by the plans I based this off of - the Roman baths in Pompeii - the upper chambers and pools would be for the men, and the lower pools for the women, but of course, you could split the difference however you please.

Two saunas are provided in addition, one in each section of the bathhouse. I believe this is technically an anachronism, since saunas I believe first appeared in Finland. But hey, I don't get points for historical accuracy, and your players probably won't mind anyways.

  • Supporter: Standard day and night variants, plus a literal bloodbath in a dark and nightmarish version of the baths. Suitable for Hell, a terrible vision, or a bad dream.
  • Enthusiast: Drained bath variants in both day & night - someone might've sabotaged the flow! Also comes with assetless versions.
  • Benefactor: Purple healing pools! Though, they may also be poisoned. Also comes with an astral/starry pool variant set at night.

Technical Details

  • Resolution: 4,760 x 3,080
  • Map Size: 22x34 tiles
  • Grid Size: 140ppi

I'm doing something new! Cze of Czepeku taught me a new trick last week - how to create master posts. Now you don't have to go find the individual map pages anymore; I'll just include links in-line on the main post here.

Supporter: Roman Bathhouse

Enthusiast: Roman Bathhouse

Benefactor: Roman Bathhouse (Raw Files)

Downloads include all content from the previous tiers.

Notes

It's big! Really big! Because I swapped to 140ppi. Turns out that this murders my computer, because a 40% increase in map size eats into my piddly 8GB of RAM hard. So, I'm spending the last few month's worth of earnings on a new computer. Cryptocurrency miners have increased GPU costs by 400%, though. Blah.

Anyways, thanks for your support and thank you for reading.
