I probably should have made an announcement about both of these some time ago, but I didn't actually learn about the sales tax problem until yesterday. Apparently, Patreon is being legally forced to implement sales tax across many pledges. I'm not clear on what Minnesotan laws on the matter look like, so I'll have to do some research on it. But from my understanding, this means that Patreon will start charging an additional 4% to 11% tax on applicable pledges. For $1 pledges, this would be between 4 and 11 cents, for example.

The current list of affected countries can be found here. If I've read the notification correctly, you may have already been notified by Patreon yourselves. Also, as I believe all of my work falls under "Downloadable Digital Goods", as listed on Patreon's guidelines, roughly half of you will not be affected by this to begin with anyways. So that should be fine.

The second thing is financial difficulties, and if you're worried about me, don't! I'm fine. I just wanted to say that if any of you have lost your jobs or income due to the virus or recent events, please, please don't feel any obligation to keep funding me. I'm fortunate enough to be in a stable financial position, and I don't want anyone to be compromising their own ability to survive just to support me. I'm thankful enough that you've thought my work worth the attention to begin with. Thank you.

Edit: I'm dumb and missed that this will affect 17 countries other than the USA. I've made changes to the post accordingly.

This will also impact patrons in certain other countries. There's a full list of the effected countries in in Patreon's post on it, I know for example that Canada is basically fine unless you live in Quebec. They already collected VAT in the EU, but some other countries will see taxes added on.

Ah, geez, I'm stupid - it's right there in the first few sentences, too. Maybe I should work on my reading comprehension. I'll change that, sorry.

I mostly know because I've gotten about 30 (it feels like) notifications about this and some call it out more clearly depending on where the creator is located I think. Don’t feel bad, I worked in email support for a tech giant for years. Nobody really reads email fully. Not even me. Lol
