What Beastars does that I really like over Zootopia is that the biological predator-prey dynamic is not a 1:1 ratio to racial/species discrimination. While Beastars does tackle speciesism and racism, the horrifying nature of animalistic instincts is always omnipresent.

For clarification, Netflix isn’t actually making the anime, they are just the distributors.

A little note about Netflix subtitles if you’re having a hard time reading them. You can alter the color and style in the settings. I changed mine to be blue with a white highlight, it seemed to work for me pretty well most the time.

Netflix “originals” are not produced by Netflix. They are already produced anime licensed by Netflix but not created by them. Netflix has no hand in their making, they just stay in Netflix “Jail” while the rest of the world gets it months earlier.

The dub is terrible. You guys should have stuck to the subs. Legoshi’s dub is TERRIBLE. It’s not even the same character anymore.

It's not though. The acting is on point and very well done in both, and unlike any other anime where both sound much more natural-like. Besides, the sub translation on Netflix is awful, like the scene at 6:57 in Episode 2 on Vimeo, Legoshi clearly says 'Yes' in Japanese, but the Netflix subs translates as 'No' like, what the hell?!

I watched the series months before it came out of Netflix Jail and it’s still changed the character/tone of Legoshi in the dub. It’s the same problem I have with the Violet Evergarden dub, changes Violet completely. I’m not saying there are no good dubs, there are definitely a few, but not this. Then again, it’s only my opinion.

I'm 90% pretty sure you meant to respond to me, but I can't tell lul. It's cool though, I'll still respond. I also watched this show as it was airing before Netflix, but I don't really know what you mean by 'changed character/tone.' I think both actors are portraying a soft-spoken, humble and depressed teenage wolf very well. I even give points to the dub for making Legoshi sound younger, probably cause the actor is younger but still, good casting. Do you have specific clip in mind that portrays your distaste better, so I can understand better? A specific scene perhaps. But, your right that it's all opinions none the less.

This reaction is golden, y’all really didn’t see it coming! Beastars was my second favourite anime of 2019 (behind Vinland Saga) and I think it’s a shame people are quick to dismiss the depths of the themes it deals with (humanity vs feral instincts, racism, female vulnerability, the intersection of sex and violence, just to name a few)...I don’t blame y’all for reacting the way you did to the final scene of episode 2 but haha. Beastars is more than just “that furry show” and I hope y’all do give it a chance, even if you don’t post any reactions to it! But thanks for this guys :)

I had Beastars as my #3 anime of 2019, behind Vinland and Mob Psycho. I can attest that for years I would always see Beastars at the top of the charts on my manga reading sites, and I would always dismiss it as "ew furry trash". I watched the anime when it came out to satiate my curiosity as to how a full CG anime would look like and was completely blown away. There is a ton of depth and complexity and the CG actually adds to the storytelling in a way that I have never seen before. If people, like me, can get over the anthropomorphic hurdle as I did, they are in for a serious treat. Ended up binging the manga (over 150+ chapters) in a span of a couple of weeks because I just could not wait.

Okay....this is seriously not the first show/movie where they encountered promiscuity, I get that some people would be uncomfortable by 'that scene' and yet the only difference between this show and for example live action series is obviously they are not human. Obviously this series has some adult topics and points to it, but I hope that one day they continue this as a series with either the sub or the dub without any subtitles. Also they need to stop with the 'Netflix made this' talk because Netflix is merely the distributor and has no hand in the making of this series.

"Netflix anime style"... Studio Orange animated it, it's Japanese. Netflix just license the content in the US. Don't let the bullshit Netflix Original label take the credit away from the actual animators. Same thing with Violet Evergarden (Kyoto Animation).

All "Netflix anime" means is that they hold a series captive and don't release it until months after it has already ended resulting in people finding unofficial means to watch them and those series never being as popular as they could've been.

Whether you watch dubbed or subbed, for a reaction or not, I hope at least Rana can finish this season at some point. As a man, I feel the show definitely appeals more towards emotions and the psychological reasoning behind those emotions, which can be lost on the male audience (i.e Chris and Nahid lol). Nahid has a fair point tho, as sexy humanoid animals are a mind fuck in and of itself. Either way, thanks for this little treat 🍬🐱‍👓👍

I mean the way he reacted was the old 'just walked in on his own parents having sex' joke. Also him saying that the series is bestiality when he made those Nezu jokes for MHA, because firstly it would be more interspecies/racial since they are all animals in the first place.

It's alright if Nahid wants to sit this one out. It was never a show everybody would like. It requires someone to look beyond the "weird furry stuff" and understand the important socio-cultural themes the show trying to discuss. But if you don't want to watch the show because you don't want to "see him eat and lick her rabbit hole", it's cool.

Holy SHIT the subtitles are terrible, lmao. Don't even watch the sub on Netflix, the subtitles are going to be telling you something totally different than what's actually being said. By the way, I feel the need to point this out because of how terrible those subtitles are. The deer's name is Louis, but the Netflix subs refer to him as 'Rouis', probably because (as racist as it may sound) Japanese speakers have trouble with L's and R's lol.

@MaliciousGrim05 It isn't racist. There literally isn't a different set of characters for L and R in japanese hiragana/katakana (source: 2 years of japanese language in college). Both Rouis and Louis are technically accurate romaji for the same name because the same character (Ru) is used for his name. You're actually assuming that his name is Louis because that's a common western name, but in the manga his name would have been written with the characters Ru-i-su.

I was recommended this show a lot but never got into it. I saw your reactions and completed the series this weekend. I feel like the show was meh, it started with a good interesting story point and thought was some kind of murder mystery but turned out to be a high school romance.

Yeah, I figured Nahid wasn't prepared for this. Guy's too simple to accept the idea of "bunny boobs". XD As much as I do unironically love this show despite the fact that I'm not a furry, I wouldn't be shocked if y'all never reacted to this show again. It's very well written and animated, but the subject matter is simply not for everybody. <8/
