Barbara wanting to change history and going against The Doctor's appeal is such a big moment. Obviously the dilemma and debate of rewriting history would continue and be expanded in Doctor Who for its future and decades to come but this is the first time that a companion and a woman has a higher authority and position of power over The Doctor and you can tell this really annoys him when he snaps at Barbara. Despite Barbara's intentions not working out, she had the right motivations but the mindset of the people in this time is far too different but also realistic. I did like when The Doctor apologised to Barbara. His apology was so awkward but I really like the way The Doctor and Barbara's relationship is developing at this point. I really like the dynamics in this story. Watching this tension kinda took me back to Fires of Pompeii when Donna challenged The Doctor over changing history and funnily enough RTD said that Donna is how he imagined that Barbara would be written in 2008 which explains so much I love them both as companions. Ian also gets a bit of a fun role with having to triumph in his position as an Aztec warrior. He put up a really good fight against his opponent. Nice showcase of his smarts and fighting skills. Your reaction to The Doctor messing up and causing Ian to get cut was so funny. And yeah, Susan got completely sidelined here. She really got nothing aside from that small insight of how the Aztecs view women lol.

Finally found time to catch up fully on your reactions...! I really do enjoy the Doctor's attitude at the start of this story; it sets those seeds which we see quite often in the modern show, with him being very pure and protective of history from his own experience. Dr Who, admittedly, can be quite inconsistent with its history-preservation rules, however I think it's interesting to see how those have been in its roots from the beginning - and it makes the Doctor's more recent attempts to fight history, such as 'Waters of Mars' with 10, that extra bit fascinating for the Doctor's character. Great reaction to this story's opener, and looking forward to when you find time/interest in watching more from the Whoniverse...! (And maybe even some more Star Wars, despite Andor's negative patreon polls, haha!) 😄
