Only half way through, but enjoying this as always. The Hobbit is in fact a rather short book, written by Tolkien for his young son. Obviously Peter Jackson has applied quite a bit of padding to the tale to span it over 3 (very long) movies. While perhaps not as great a trilogy as the Lord of the Rings movies, I still enjoy it. Incidentally Radigast the Brown is played by Sylvester McCoy, who was the 7th Doctor between 1986 and 1989 in the Classic Doctor Who era.

You probably couldn't get a young Gandalf movie. Technically he's probably always been old as he's not actually human. The five Wizards (Gandalf the Grey, Saroman the White, Radogast the Brown and the Two Blue Wizards) they are sort of like Angels, placed on Middle Earth from a higher power to maintain balance from evil forces.

In order, 1. Fili, 2. Kili, 3. Thorin, 4. Dwalin To heck with the rest. And the hip thing is for nerds to bitch and moan about the movies being too long or straying from the books and whatnot. My take is "More time in Middle Earth with the cast = Great".

Just coming to the end of the first part. If you think back to the Fellowship of the Ring. Bilbo told a story about his adventures, in particular one of Trolls being turned to stone. A nice tie in.

The elves fight all the time. These movies just don't focus on their story. For instance, during the Lord of the Rings, the elves of Lothlorien, Rivendell, and Mirkwood (Legolas' home) were attacked.
