DeathSwitch

Im glad you pointed out how toxic their relationship is. As well as the addiction thing before Clara says it. Its something the show does really well at exploring as their relationship continues. Imo, Doctor is right when he says they didnt have time to mourn.. he had no idea what this thing was or how to stop it. If he wouldve allowed them time to mourn then everyone wouldve died probably along with Clara and himself also. Its what i like about him compared to the other doctors is that they wouldve kept this lie (youre going to survive ill save you) up all the way up until they died thinking theyd live but 12 essentially just said "look youre going to die, we cant stop it killing everyone else without your help so make this count and help us".. is that heartless? Yes, no doubt but also honest. But what he said at the end was important too; sometimes the only choices are bad ones but you still have to make them. A lot of the complaints around season 8 revolve around how callous this doctor is, so you arent alone in not liking him yet. It was always his plan to transfer the grandaughters pain into his head but he didnt know if itd work.. yet he still nearly sacrificed himself trying to save her, not something the doctor prior to the last episode wouldve done imo. The journey continues!

Loved your post-episode thoughts! I appreciate how thoughtfully you analyze Clara and 12 and their relationship. I feel like I shouldn’t comment on a lot of what you said, so I’ll only say that I’m super excited for you to continue and see where things go 😄. I’ll just comment on: “It’s complicated.” Yep that sums it up nicely lol. I love that where they’re at right now is kinda dark and unhealthy, lacking in communication, etc. It’s just so compelling to me and so different to anything the show has done before with a Dr and companion. Plus it gives the actors a lot of great material to work with in terms of drama. And they do an awesome job with it!

Completely agree with your thoughts on their relationship; it is so toxic, and if anything I kudos the writers for exploring such a complicated deal, as it poses a lot of conversation and discussion. Both of the characters are in the wrong- and that's not a dislike of them, it's merely a flaw that they have, which creates some really good conflict. Great reaction/ thoughts as ever!

I agree with what you said about Clara and the Doctor’s relationship. Clara and the Doctor are both bad for each other. It’s like the previous companion -Doctor relationships on steroids in terms of codependency and all sorts. I won’t go too much into it. I read in other videos that Jenna Coleman said when she said I love you on the phone she was really saying it to the Doctor. Not sure if I fully buy it but her decision to stay with him would make sense. Regarding this episode, I think he was right. He couldn’t save any of those who died but he could gather as much information to try with the next one. It was only when he realised he should be the next victim that he had a plan. It’s like how for some hope is everything but for others hope is paralysing.

I think the scene on the beach is one of my favorite Doctor Who scenes but also I didn't think about it much when I first watched it. I still love how a lot of the Clara/Doctor stuff is them exchanging their own viewpoints and talking through their conflicts. Clara asks if the Doctor is pretending to be heartless, and there's so much going on there. She's scared of that part of him as well, but we also see a philosophy the Doctor has always had but brought to the forefront "Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones. But you still have to choose." Clara's a bit enticed by the idea, which is definitely something the Doctor would hate. Both of them are working through things as they talk and it's interesting. Part of what I've always thought about this episode was that it never occurred to the Doctor to take on Maisie's mental illness until Clara confronts him about it in the traincar. Despite the fact he later says he sorta planned for it, I just don't think it's true. That's what's so interesting to me about the Clara/Doctor dynamic, they're learning from each other, but maybe not learning the right lessons. You're right though, they're toxic as hell, and it's interesting to see that explored.

Such a good episode (as is the next one) and a favorite from the series. Clara is about to leave the Tardis then reconsiders lying to both Danny and the Doctor in the process. How long can she keep that up? And wasn't it a shame Perkins didn't come along? Can't blame him though, I wouldn't want to get in the middle of what's happens next. Stay tune.

she said i love you to the doctor so...

Yep, the Doctor and Clara's friendship is definitely quite unhealthy by this stage. I mean, what the hell was that with telling Danny that it was over? It was like she was deliberately complicating things for herself. She knew that he would have been completely fine about it. I can only conclude that she enjoyed the extra risk of it.

Daniel Reynolds

Amazing reaction as always and yep, jenna coleman said during a panel that the I love you was aimed at the doctor so that’s interesting to say the least😂

Absolutely love your post-show thoughts. You have such an interesting take on the relationship. Very interested to see your thoughts in the coming episodes.

The toxicity is an interesting element of their friendship to highlight. Not sure exactly what you are seeing there my friend... Just kidding, it is wonderfully awkward and entertainingly unhealthy isn't it. That's precisely the complexity I particularly love in this paring. I do enjoy the rough edges of this Doctor. I can appreciate why others wouldn't tho. Interestingly this personality probably slightly resembles more previous Doctors. So it's the previous three that are more the aberration in that regard. They obviously had their own similarities and differences too. That's the gamble in having to have a change isn't it. But more fun for the actors. "Are you my mummy." A small call back there which many appreciate.
