The Doctor didn’t want to say his name as it would restart the Time War. Probably the best regeneration speech by any Doctor, in my opinion. “We’re all different people all through our lives. And that’s okay, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be.” As to the church, they weren’t the Doctor’s enemy, or trying to kill him. They were on his side trying to prevent all the others fighting to take over the planet and kill the Doctor. As Tasha Lem said, though, it was a splinter group (led by eyepatch woman from series 6) who decided it was better to try to kill the Doctor, which resulted in the Tardis blowing up and causing the crack in the first place. All very timey wimey! Also, it was established in Classic Who that Time Lords were restricted to 12 regenerations, so when you take 10’s fake/partial regeneration in the series 4 finally, and John Hurt’s War Doctor, that technically makes Mat Smith number 13 - the end of his regeneration cycle. So the Time Lords sent some regeneration energy through the crack to save him. Now, as to what is to come next, it may take you a while to adjust to Peter Capaldi, as he has a very different take on the Doctor, especially at first. But hopefully he will grow on you, as he is truly superb. In Classic Who, the Doctor was never really young and handsome (apart from #5), and Capaldi is much more like earlier Classic Doctors. Enough said, though. Just take a deep breath and brace yourself!😉😎👍

Oh, and by the way, both Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were bald and wearing wigs for this episode. Matt had shaved his head for charity I think, and Karen had started her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy.

One last little thing. Clara’s granny was played by Sheila Reid, who last appeared in Doctor Who in the 80s in a very dark 6th Doctor story about a world under a dictatorship that kept the population submissive by broadcasting “reality TV” of live executions and torture. She played a citizen glued to her TV watching all the salacious broadcasts. They had some truly wonderful scripts in the classic era!

I really loved the 11th Doctor, and I was so happy that he got such a beautiful regeneration scene. I really liked that he spent his final moments comforting Clara (and us!), making the most of the end of his time. The music that plays over it is so beautiful. It is reused from The Rings Of Akhaten, but fits perfectly. Really nice to see Amy again. I'm sure you will hate 12 for a while, but try to keep the faith! He just needs to remember who he really is. He becomes one of my favourites. I do quite like how he is early on though, it can be quite funny.

I’m still shocked at how fast 11 regenerated. I tried so hard not to like 12 for so long that I delayed watching his season😂 but once I watched him I forgot all that. His character journey is incredible. I hope you end up loving him too. Although I can’t wait to see your next reactions given your strong feelings right now ahahah.

We finally made it to the last page. This is a long time coming because as we all know the Doctor doesn't like endings.

So Peter Capaldi is now the Twelfth Doctor which at the time was quite a shock to many of the young Whovians who were so accustomed to Eleven’s youthful face. Twelve will take some time to get used to so please do be patient. Capaldi is a wonderful actor who loved the show in his youth and it reflects in his performance which is somewhat classic WHO at first but develops into so much more. Enough said. Trivia: In his youth Capaldi who is Scottish was good friends with one Craig Ferguson who used to be the host of The Late Late Show, before current host James Corden, and who is also a huge Doctor Who fan himself. Anyway during their youth they were in a punk band in the 70s/80s called The Dreamboys (previously titled The Bastards From Hell). This is all captured in a wonderful interview on Ferguson’s show, which btw took place before Capaldi became the Doctor. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atijWqBG7Vw

I love these last 3 episodes with Matt, Name of, Day of and Time of the Doctor are probably my favorite last 3 episodes with a doctor; they each have such big ramifications for the whole show. This doctor essentially has just been through another time war, along with him being the first time lord to go past 12 regenerations.. its bound to throw off your balance 😅. Capaldi is my fav doctor, the arc he goes through is Moffat at his best imo. As people say above he does get some getting used to and us watching it live did have a rest period of about 5 months after this christmas episode, so we were all a bit anxious to get back into it. Understandable if you hate him at first, i did too 😂

Ian Smith

Although Smith is my favourite of the NewWho Doctors, Capaldi is undoubtedly the best when it comes to acting performance - and I'm sure you'll develop a similar bond with him. His interpretation is more 'Classic-series oriented';so you may need to be patient with him :) As for this episode: as I understand it,Moffat was expecting Smith to stay around for another year, and had designed his story_character arc accordingly. Unfortunately,Smith decided that Hollywood was potentially beckoning and decided not to continue; which entailed Moffat having to cram many of his planned upcoming plot details into one episode - and it shows. It's all over the place;with plot lines, ideas and characters introduced and promptly written out. The idea of the Doctor staying in one place and ageing was a good one - but I feel that that idea was quite enough for one story. It didn't need everything else cluttering it up, imo. Nonetheless, the final five minutes are lovely.

Last post I promise but I just heard your final thoughts on the episode and so I thought I'd share this wonderful tribute to Matt Smith's Doctor. From the Doctor Who Proms, aired during the 50th anniversary, here is the Eleventh Doctor's Theme, "I Am The Doctor": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyFmdI8LLT4

Don’t worry about crying. It’s 7 years on, and although I don’t watch it very often, I still sob when I do. I love and hate this episode at the same time, lol. He’s my Doctor and that’s saying something as I have seen all of the Classic Doctors as well, and for the longest time, it was Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor. He was the cameo at the end of Day of the Doctor. I still love Tom, and I never thought anyone could unseat him from that top spot. But then enters a very young Matt Smith. One of the great things about him is his love for this program and this part, after not growing up with it, like Capaldi and Tennant. Upon getting the part, he went and watched all of NuWho, and at least one story from each of the Classic Doctors. He also shows great appreciation for all of his fans to this day, as does Tennant and Capaldi. All three are great Ambassadors for the show. All of them have done numerous Comicons, and a lot of their panels are on YouTube if you’re interested. I can’t remember if you said you watched The Crown. The 1st two seasons are spectacular! I have one very English friend who wasn’t interested, but after seeing the 1st Episode, he said it was one of the greatest opening episodes of any show he had ever seen. It wasn’t just the writing, but the look of it, the whole package. I think Henry gave you a link to the Proms. If you want, you can now watch that concert without spoilers, unless you plan on watching Classic Who. Then you can just skip the part where they play the Classic music. You’ll know when. I’ll leave a link for that here. It’s not the entire thing, but it’s really a lot of fun. I still miss Matt to this day. I put off watching Capaldi for a long time, and he starts off a little surly, but grows into the part, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with him. A better actor than Matt? I’m not of that opinion, but damn, he’s good! Also, a little giggle. I’ll leave a link to Matt at a Comicon describing Doctor Who in the Voice of a teenage girl. Just a bit of fun. Hang in there, it will get better. No guarantees of course. 😊 The Proms: https://youtu.be/jI4r6KUvRdk Comicon: https://youtu.be/yOtmUoZeZzE

Yeah I saw Matt Smith in The Crown first before and never knew that he was in Doctor Who. I don’t remember his performance in The Crown but I began to notice how good of an actor he was in a movie called Charlie Says where he played Charles Manson.

Matt Smith shaved his head for a role in a film Ryan Gosling was Directing and Karen had just filmed the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, both wearing wigs in their final scene together. The Doctor bringing the Time Lords back would have been like leading a lamb to the slaughter, he went to great lengths to keep them safe, they would have been decimated in a second Time War, destroying Trenzalore, not just the people of Christmas. The voice asking "Doctor Who?" i believe was the bald Time Lord General you saw in the 50th special, the one that gave the Doctor the permission to put Gallifrey in a pocket Dimension. Peter Capaldi, the 12th Doctor is very different, but quite brilliant too. He's an actor best known for aggressive, confrontational roles, so when people learnt he was the next Doctor we got excited. I hope you'll give him a chance, like I said, he's very different to Matt Smith (as all Doctors regenerations should be)

The 8th series is a bit rough for some people, but Peter Capaldi is a great actor. I know your probably going to hate him pretty much through the 1st series, and that's OK. In my opinion, he just has to find out who he is, and he doesn't want to get hurt.

Elle

Awww!! Don't call yourself stupid, we have all been there, especially when it's "our" Doctor who was regenerating. For some it was 9, some 10, some 11 and so on. "I'll always remember when the Doctor was me." Beautiful send-off! Triumphant send-off really.

Elle

Some lines this episode that I suggest you remember for the new season: Clara: "Emergency. You're my boyfriend." / Doctor: "Ding dong. Okay, brilliant. I may be a bit rusty in some areas, but I will glance at a manual." / Clara: "No, no, you're not actually my boyfriend." Woman: "What did you say your name was?" / Clara: "Bubbly personality masking bossy control freak?" Doctor: "Go back in the Tardis now and just do as I say." / Clara: -does as he says- See you in 8x1! Personally my favorite "first episode" for a new Doctor. I think it sets up the new Doctor really well by posing some really interesting questions. Can't wait to see what you think of it.

Yes Capaldi will definitely take some getting used to... the next two changes of Doctor are both quite a jolt (whereas Smith really didn't play it hugely differently to Tennant IMO). First time through with Capaldi I didn't love him, but watching later with reactors, he's grown on me immensely.

Evan!!

Still makes me cry, Matt Smith was my favorite Doctor during his era, though I don't think the episode is particularly good. I hope you learn to love Capaldi, the reactions to his run are very mixed, but his era is FAR above as my favorite Doctor Who ever made.

JY

I knew you'd get emotional. It's always hard to say goodbye to your favourite Doctor. Its nice to see you finally found your Doctor. Regeneration episodes are always difficult to watch especially when its your favourite Doctor or era of the show. Part of the nature but the show must go on regardless of the change haha I hate to say it but I really don't like this story. Matt Smith is by far my least favourite modern Doctor out of all the three you've seen so far. It's mainly due to the writing which makes 11 my least favourite Doctor. I feel like he deserved a lot better than he got. Series 5 showed him having the best potential but the second half of Series 6 and 7 is where he fell apart for me. Series 7 was a real mess. Both writing and character wise. The Doctor just became more goofy, annoying and irritating without the redeeming qualities. It becomes even more noticeable after Amy left. He just became all over the place. .He doesn't really have much chemistry with Clara like he did with Amy. The thing you brought up about Clara not being enough of a character and more of a plot device is also a noticeable issue. This final story feels like a messy mish mash of the all the plot elements of Smith's era. It just doesn't work for me. The whole naked thing is kinda weird too. I feel like the last few minutes are the only good parts of this episode. The regeneration scene is genuinely good while the rest is a mess. But it's nice to see that he's become your favourite Doctor. Sadly he's the complete opposite for me but it's nice when reactors find their Doctor. It might take you a while to adjust to Capaldi.
