Paul McGann played the 8th Doctor in one TV movie that failed to kickstart the series again. When Christopher Eccleston rebooted the show in 2005 as 9 there was always a gap where we didn’t know what happened to 8 to regenerate into 9, this fills in the gap.

Also as a little addition, the Time War happened between Classic and Modern Who, so Gallifrey was seen in classic stuff.

If it helps, the show does explain more about the numberings of regenerations. He didnt call himself the doctor during the time war but it was still a body. The first time we see 9 was just after the end of this episode for John Hurts doctor (he mentioned seeing his new ears for the first time in episode 1) and it explains why his doctor hated the daleks so much.. hed just fought a war for (presumably) hundreds of years against them. The War Doctor started his fight as a younger man and aged natrually during the war, so that was his reflection.. Before his passing, John managed to record some audio dramas for Big Finish... which is also where most of the 8th doctors stories are. Its a real shame they didnt manage to get Chris back but from what ive read, there was some bad blood with the BBC when he left doctor who, he wasnt 100% on the script, he wanted a specific director, had other projects and just overall didnt seem like it was going to happen so Steven came up with John Hurts doctor and thats how the The War Doctor came about. Oh, and the curator at the end was indeed the 4th doctor, Tom Baker.. a treasure

john hurt was before Christopher Eccleston (9) but after Paul McGann (8). so he's like 8.5, but he didn't call himself the doctor as he broke the promise he gave himself to "never be cruel and never be cowardly". the doctor is just a title he gives himself. So the numbering is still the same.

also, in the night of the doctor minisode, cass only hated the doctor because he's a timelord and assumed he's part of the war. but at that time he hadn't fought in it yet as he chose not to

Omg I never noticed they showed Peter Capaldi in this episode that’s such a cool addition.

S

Oh and your right about this showing what happened with the 10th Doctor. It was the Shakespeare episode in season 3 where the Doctor and Martha ran away from the Queen at the end of the episode. So we know now what he did to her.

There have been other Multiple Doctor stories, and they’re very popular with the fandom. Usually it takes some kind of outside force to bring them together and allow for them to occupy the same time stream. In the past, it was the Time Lords, and in this special it was the Moment. Don’t ask me how that would work, because I have no idea, lol. Moffat knew he couldn’t allow them to remember because that would have affected who the Doctor was at the beginning of the reboot. So Moffat came up with this solution. Letting David say, “I don’t want to go” at the end there was a way of preserving David’s last line as the Doctor. Some people have gotten pissed that it was used, usually because they think it’s inserted just for effect, but it does have a purpose. As far as all the other Doctors we’re concerned, there’s no definitive answer here, but most people assume he just contacted them, How? No clue. The Eleventh Doctor (and yes he is still the Eleventh Doctor) has all those memories hidden away, but chooses to forget them. Perhaps he could pull them out when he chooses, that’s my theory anyway. Thank you and take care

Yeah, it's 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> 6 -> 7 -> 8 -> War Doctor -> 9 -> 10 -> 11. War Doctor doesn't get a number because 1) we didn't know about him before, and 2) he didn't consider himself the Doctor. The Time War happens between the Classic Series and the New Series.

One more special, the last of the trilogy, "Name of the Doctor", "Day of the Doctor", and the Christmas special, "Time of the Doctor". So good. Moffat really did well with the 50th Anniversary.

Some context to the old Curator at the end. He was played by Tom Baker who was the 4th Doctor and many peoples favourite from Classic Who. It's never stated but speculated the Curator is actually the Doctor from the Far Future, and he re-uses his old faces to visit his favourite regenerations (thats why Matt winked at him). The Doctor retires and becomes Curator of the Museum and is why he knows that Gallifrey is still out there. You noticed the round things on the wall behind them, its to suggest the Museum is actually the Tardis in different form. You are right that the inclusion of John Hurt fucks up the numbering of Doctors, but John Hurts Regeneration never used the title of "The Doctor" so he technically wasn't the 9th Doctor, just the 9th regeneration. The whole John Hurt casting only happened because Christopher Eccleston respectfully refused to come back, apparently production wasn't great during his time as Doctor and him and Russel T Davis didn't see eye to eye. He also had a problem with Anorexia which being on the show worsened so it was hard for him to come back, even under Steven Moffat. Good news is in recent years his feelings have changed and has started appearing at Doctor Who panels and even reprised his role in Audio stories.

John Hurt comes between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston

10: "Still, loving the posh gravelly thing, it's very convincing." 11: "Brave words, Dick Van Dyke." That's a dig at David Tennant's slightly dubious English accent. 😂

The bit where Elizabeth says "I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but at the time, so did the Zygon!" is a reference to an actual quote from Elizabeth defending her abilities as a military leader: "I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too." The version in Blackadder II is "I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman. But I have the heart and stomach of a concrete elephant." 🤣

In the night of the doctor the actress you saw it was josie from being human UK

Steven Moffat says that he found that year of Doctor Who really stressful! Having to juggle writing a season of Who and also to write a decent 50th anniversary episode. If he'd messed the 50th up, some people probably wouldn't have forgiven him. He says that he found trying to write funny dialogue between the different Doctors particularly stressful! Thankfully, he didn't screw it up, in my opinion. He says that he was planning to leave at the end of Matt Smith's era, but he really didn't want to end it on a really stressful note, so he decided to stay a bit longer. Three more years, FYI. 😀 By the way, I mentioned The Five-ish Doctors Reboot earlier, a comedy involving previous Doctors trying to get parts in the 50th. It's so much fun. If you want to watch it, it is here - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vrrgx It is a lot of fun. Lots of familiar faces, including from other shows you're currently watching, and major films you've probably seen.😂 I don't know if it's officially on any major streaming services. I bet you'd laugh out loud at the opening scene, so at least watch that. 🤣

OMG I think Tennant's accent is perfect. I didn't know who he was when he took over as the Doctor and I wasn't even aware he was Scottish, it was THAT good.

Mark Ward

As always, some of your questions (particularly regarding what happens to the Zygons) will be answered in due course... (You'll be fine with the next guy, though he does take some getting used to as he's very different to Tennant and Smith...!!)

I'm not sure if this was understood, but Gallifrey is not in that painting or in any painting. The Doctors froze and locked it in a pocket universe. When they did that,, they don't know where they put it or if their plan even worked. But later the Curator (the title the Doctor chooses when he retires) strongly hints to Eleven that it did work and that Gallifrey is out there, waiting to be found and unfrozen. Hence why at the end 11 says that Clara thinks he is never going anywhere, just wandering, but that actually he now finally knows where he is going aka to find Gallifrey.

Elle

As others clarified, the 8th Doctor regenerated into a young John Hurt War Doctor, who then aged naturally while fighting in the war. Time Lord's age much more slowly than humans, so the War Doctor was fighting for hundreds of years, and (to my knowledge) the Doctor probably existed as the War Doctor longer than as any other incarnation of himself since his first form. He then regenerates to the Ninth Doctor and meets Rose almost immediately after. I really loved the Nine and Rose relationship when I first watched that season, and I always felt Nine loved Rose. In retrospect, it is absolutely believable that Nine would feel so strongly about Rose, the girl he met and traveled with right after fighting in a war for hundreds of years and losing all his people, by his own hands. And buried deep down, in a place he can't access it, was the memory of the Moment's interface, with Rose's face. Rose was also Nine's "conscience" in the Dalek episode when he almost killed the defenseless Dalek who told him "You would make a good Dalek."

Nice to see you enjoyed this. This anniversary is the best thing to come out of 2013 after the disappointment of Series 7. It's pure fanservice. Not too keen on the Zygons though and I have conflicted feelings on Gallifrey being saved. But still enjoyable. However, as great as John Hurt is, I'd rather not have the War Doctor and would have preferred if they put the 8th Doctor in his place instead purely because I want the 8th Doctor to have more screentime (plus it would make things a bit less complicated). It's a shame that we couldn't get the 9th Doctor to be involved as he would be in the perfect role for this. But since Christopher Eccleston rejected it for obvious reasons, I wish they would have made Paul McGann the war Doctor since he's not really had significant screen time outside of the movie. No disrespect to John Hurt. I liked his interactions with 10 and 11 but I would have preferred to have seen 8 destroy Gallifrey and then regenerate into the 9th Doctor. Night of The Doctor was good but it just wasn't enough for me. I need more 8 lol.
