You nailed it, after Utopia it's pretty much empty.

Evan!!

I enjoyed it this time, but I generally think this three parter is meh. The Master is obviously from the Classic Series and in terms of Master stories, it really doesn't do much to get new viewers invested in the character.

Evan!!

In terms of spirituality, RTD is an atheist but loves using religious iconography for the Doctor, which is just something he does.

I love Martha and I love that she left on her own terms. I hope you’ll watch Torchwood one day.

Since you most likely watched the Amazon/Netflix version of this episode, I thought I'd let you know that they've removed some significant scenes in this episode. This is due to streaming services using the edited version of this episode. Unfortunately, the full version is only available on DVD. I'll give you some info about the scenes that got removed in the streaming services. Some of the following scenes that were removed in the edited version include: The Master singing to "I Can't Decide" by the Scissor Sisters. Martha had an extended conversation with the resistance members There were scenes that showed The Master's wife with bruises which hinted that he abused her (which is why she shoots him in the end) Francine (Martha's mother) pulled a gun on The Master before Lucy but The Doctor convinces her not to shoot him. Martha gives flowers to Professor Docherty and tells her that she forgives her for reporting her to The Master even though she can't remember the year that never was Martha also calls Tom after time was reversed (just before she rejects travelling further with The Doctor). She does this to check if he's still alive and smiles when she hears his voice. This might be why certain stuff in this episode felt rushed.

Omg I would’ve loved to have seen the wife’s bruises, Martha’s mom with a gun and especially Martha checking up on Tom! That would’ve been amazing!🤭

Yeah, I thought Utopia was great, but the last two episodes weren't that great. I think season 4 is much better overall, and has a really great run of episodes from episodes 8 to 13 (with some pretty enjoyable ones before that).

Wow the last three all together. Cheers Other Boy. I'm with a lot of the comments already on here. This is not a fav finale of mine. But it's saved quite a bit by the Face of Boe connection which I always look forward to seeing reactions to. I go back and forth on the ending quite a bit depending on my mood. On good days I find that there is a lot of self therapy in forgiveness. On others, I can be like fuck you I don't care about you. It does remind me of the ending of the film Philomena which I do recommend if you haven't seen it. It's absolutely Dench! 😁

The issue with flashbacks is they try not to show much of Gallifrey or the Doctors past, as there's always a mystique to the Doctor and the Time Lords. For example when the show started his first companion was his Grand Daughter, "Susan". Which means he's had kids and was probably married on Gallifrey - but we never know anything about them, he never talks about them. I think it explains his reluctance to be intimate or form romantic relationships with people, he's loved and lost and can't put himself through that again, expecially with beings that have shorter life expediencies than himself. I honestly don't know what the Doctor could have said to Martha once she decided to leave, "I'm sorry but i dont fancy you" or "its not you, its me" - letting her leave on her own terms was probably the best option for both of them.

otherboy

I still think he should’ve said something. It’s cowardly not to say anything. She’s proven her strength in tough situations and deserves the respect of an explanation even if it’s not one she wants to hear. That always bothers me about the Doctor

I find this cut down version of this episode quite jarring. Having seen the full version with all the scenes outlined by JY in the comments, the ending here certainly is rushed and disjointed to me. I don’t mind John Simm as the Master, though he does go over the top at times. Simm himself has said, I believe, that if he had his time again in the role he would tone it down. The original Master, played by Roger Delgado in the early 1970s, was suave, sophisticated, charming and utterly ruthless, and is regarded by many as the best in that role. By the way, there is in fact a short 6 minute “minisode” called Time Crash, which I recommend you watch before moving on to The Voyage of the Damned Christmas Special. While not essential to continuity, it is a bit of fun and may provide you with a bit of insight into the Doctor.

I think it's worth remembering that Doctor Who has a huge 26 season (plus multiple spin off novelisations and movies) history before the 3 seasons you've seen, so characters like the Master were a great 'return' for the Classic Who fans. They had to try and balance carefully catering to the new fans and the old fans and I think they actually did this quite well. I enjoyed John Simm's take on the Master - right up there with the best of the previous actors to play the role for me. Having said that, I hate the deux ex machina of them all thinking 'Doctor' at the same time - it completely ruins the episode for me.

Mark Ward

Yeah just got to the bit where you said it would have been better if they'd mentioned the Master before and some of The Doctor's history with him etc... I really think that wouldn't have worked AT ALL, because as soon as The Master's name was mentioned it would have ruined any surprise for any of the Classic fans. They really had to make a choice - give a big pay off for people who had shown loyalty to the show for 30+ years or give a different type of pay off for people who were reasonably new to the show. I think it rewarded loyalty, which I think is a nice thing to do for the uber-fans,.

I like how we find out how the Face Of Boe knew there was another Time Lord out there

otherboy

I like that too but the Face of Boe could’ve been more specific 😂

kinda dissapointed at ur reaction for this one lol, the master is one of my fave characters.
