It's personal preference but I think the show made the right decision and I know that it is widely liked. I have watched many teen dramas and so many of them go wrong during the college years for many reasons. For example, characters are often split apart as it is unrealistic for them all to go to the same college. Additionally, the characters in teen dramas often act like college students during the high school years (lack of parental supervision, freedom, sex, drugs, etc.). So, college would just seem like more of the same. They would not suddenly be getting more freedom because they already had it. We would watch Nathan continue to play college basketball games, they would go to classes, etc. Whereas now, we get to see more mature problems and themes (marriage in trouble, unemployment, struggling with finding yourself after college, navigating careers, etc.). I thought it was a nice reset. Of course, not to say that some shows cannot do the college years right but many don't in my opinion.
